Fifty Shades: 3-Movie Collection 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Justin Dekker February 9, 2026

Bringing the steamy trilogy of films together for this release, the 'Fifty Shades: 3-Movie Collection 4K' arrives on 4K UHD disc courtesy of Universal. The first film, 'Fifty Shades of Grey', was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson ('Back to Black (2024)'), while the second and third installments, 'Fifty Shades Darker' and 'Fifty Shades Freed', were directed by James Foley ('Perfect Stranger (2007)'). Based on the wildly popular novels by E. L. James (Erika Mitchell), the films star Dakota Johnson ('The Five-Year Engagement') as the innocent and reserved Anastasia Steele, playing opposite Jamie Dornan's ('Racing Hearts') Christian Grey, a man of wealth and unconventional sexual appetites who brings her into the world of BDSM fantasies. Both the Theatrical and Unrated cuts are included in this six-disc set (three 4K UHD discs and three Blu-ray discs). A slipcover and a Digital Code redeemable via Movies Anywhere are also included.

The Fifty Shades trilogy of films chart the relationship of the young Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and the wealthy Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). From their initial chance meeting, to their inevitable break-up, and further on to their equally inevitable reconnection and eventual marriage, theirs would be a love story like those from a fairy tale were it not for the films' forthright focus on sexuality. Just as the books on which the films were based offered many a steamy thrill on page after page of the three volumes, so too do the films put Anastasia's introduction and assimilation into the BDSM lifestyle that Christian leads on full display, with only what cannot be safely depicted in an R-rated film left to the imagination. When the first film landed in theaters, a curious audience thrust the film to approximately $85 million in receipts on its opening weekend, and it ultimately finished with gross earnings in excess of $560 million worldwide. The subsequent sequels each earned roughly half of those amounts. Clearly, something in these films resonated with the interests of the movie-going public. However, despite the frequent heated couplings which thrilled audiences, the first installment did not appeal to critics, and Fifty Shades of Grey would go in to "win" five Razzies; Worst Actor and Worst Actress for Johnson and Dornan, as well as "wins" for Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Screen Combo (for the comely leads in tandem). The two sequels would net three more Razzies combined. One of these camps is correct, but, as with all art, beauty, or the lack thereof, is in the eye of the beholder.

Fifty Shades: 3-Movie Collection 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Initially popular with movie-goers during their theatrical releases, only time will tell if any or all of these films have the staying power to join the ranks of the classics of erotic cinema. They are, though, somewhat set apart and made unique by their BDSM focus. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are certainly well-cast from a physical perspective even if their acting skills aren't exactly up to snuff. Still, the films do have a certain charm and look (and sound) quite good in 4K. For fans of the books and/or the series of films who have yet to add them to their libraries, Universal's Fifty Shades: 3-Movie Collection 4K comes recommended.
