Ferris Bueller is a popular high school student living in an affluent Chicago suburb. After convincing his parents that he is truly sick, Ferris calls on his friend Cameron to join him for a day of hooky from school. Cameron agrees, reluctantly, because it means taking his father's prized classic 1961 red Ferrari 250 GT convertible. They pick up Ferris's girlfriend head for adventure in downtown Chicago—all the while trying to outsmart and outrun the dean of students who has become wise to Ferris' plan.

Paramount has released a UHD presentation of the classic 1986 Comedy film 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off.' New specifications include 2160p/Dolby Vision video and Dolby Atmos audio. Supplements are similar to the original 2009 release but this disc adds a commentary track and loses an image gallery.
The included screenshots are sourced from a 1080p Blu-ray disc.
Paramount brings Ferris Bueller's Day Off to the UHD format with an excellent 2160p/Dolby Vision UHD presentation. The image is purely filmic
with very little deviation from the appearance of a rich, accurate, and faithful presentation. Grain management is particularly exemplary, presenting
with stability and accuracy and very little fluctuation to density. Never does the image appear overly smoothed out or, on the other hand, never does
grain appear overly clumpy. The result is a texture far superior to the aged 2009 Blu-ray and details that soar well beyond its capabilities. The picture
continuously reveals its content with sharpness and richness, ranging from basics like faces and clothes to the dense details inside Ferris' bedroom or in
various locales throughout Chicago. The picture thrives on visual complexity and natural cinematic tendencies, making this the most complex and
complete image for the film ever seen at home.
The Dolby Vision color grading nearly measures out to the level of "revelation." While the core tonal essentials remain in place, the added accuracy,
nuance, and tonal accuracy bring new life to the familiar palette. The colors offer bolder vividness to the red Ferrari and added tonal majesty to the
posters and the flag in Ferris' room. Clothing, like Cameron's red Detroit Red Wings jersey, shows new life and depth while less intense tones, such as
those on Ferris' jacket, present with greater clarity and accuracy. Whites are bold and black level depth is superb. Flesh tones are handled with
meticulous attention to detail. Add that there is no visible print damage or evident compression issues, and this is a wonderful refresh of a classic film
that nearly maximizes its potential on the UHD format.
For this UHD release of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Paramount has not simply repurposed the existing Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack but instead upgraded the audio to the Dolby Atmos configuration. This is not a track that necessarily screams for, demands, or takes much advantage of the added channels, but this is certainly the fullest and finest track ever for the film at home. Most of the content lingers around the front, offering good core definition and suitably spacious presentation parameters. The front is stretched to a satisfying width and clarity to all elements holds to pleasing levels. The front is where the track lingers and does most of its work. Surround content is reserved for some of the more boisterous locales, such as a busy bar or at the Cubs ballgame, but even then the sense of back-channel immersion is more minimal than it is momentous. The surround channels are more concerned with building atmosphere than they are powering to high levels of output, which does satisfy the base listen fans have come to know and love over the past few decades of home audio listening. The subwoofer rarely contributes much with the exception of some throaty car growls, and the overhead channels only offer scant amounts of support with no real tangible adds in terms of discrete usage. Atmos might be a bit overkill here, but there is no doubt that this is at least the most finessed and full the track has ever sounded, even if the improvements are only measured in degrees rather than leaps over the previous audio issues.
This UHD release of Ferris Bueller's Day Off contains most of the same extras from the 2009 Blu-ray. Added is a commentary track with
Director John Hughes and subtracted is an image gallery. See below for a list of what's included and please click here for full coverage. A digital copy code is included with
purchase.
Arguably Director John Hughes' (Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, The Breakfast Club) best film, Ferris Bueller's Day Off remains a Comedy classic that never wears out its welcome. It tells a story that remains, seemingly, forever relevant, commenting on the unending war between teenager and boredom at school and teenage rebellion. Perhaps most importantly, however, is the film's coming-of-age theme that defines one character and shows that some of life's best lessons are learned outside the classroom. Also featuring wonderful acting, including several career-defining performances, and too-numerous-to-count memorable lines and situations, Ferris Bueller's Day Off resides among the best the Comedy genre has to offer. Paramount has done right by the film's UHD release, providing a wonderful new 2160p/Dolby Vision video transfer, a fine Atmos presentation, and a few extras. Ferris Bueller's Day Off comes very highly recommended on the UHD format; it's a must for every serious film library.
