Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season Blu-ray Movie Review

More extra features shamble onto this double dip.

Reviewed by Martin Liebman April 1, 2016

In preparation for the season two debut of 'Fear the Walking Dead' on April 10, 2016 on AMC television, Anchor Bay has released a special two-disc edition of season one, containing a significant boost in supplementary content over the previous edition's meager allotment of bonus content. Video and audio presentations appear to be unchanged between releases.

Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season's special edition release contains commentaries for each episode and other extras on disc two. No special or unique packaging has been used, and no McFarlane Toys statues or figurines are included. The two extras from the previous edition do no carry over. This is what the first release should have included out of the gate. A UV digital copy voucher and a leaflet promoting season two and a new program called "Preacher" are included with purchase.

Disc One:

  • Audio Commentaries: For Pilot: Co-Creator/Executive Producer Dave Erickson, Co-Executive Producer/Director Adam Davidson, and Actor Kim Dickens. For So Close, Yet So Far: Co-Creator/Executive Producer Dave Erickson, Co-Executive Producer/Director Adam Davidson, and Actor Kim Dickens. For The Dog: Co-Executive Producer David Wiener and Actor Alycia Debnam-Carey. For Not Fade Away: Executive Producer David Alpert and Co-Executive Producer David Wiener.

Disc Two:

  • Audio Commentaries: For Cobalt: Executive Producer David Alpert and Co-Executive Producer/Writer David Wiener. For The Good Man: Co-Creator/Executive Producer Dave Erickson and Actors Kim Dickens and Elizabeth Rodriguez.
  • Pilot Episode: The Widescreen Version (1080p, 1:04:24, Dolby TrueHD 5.1): The series' debut episode presented at an aspect ratio of ~2.39:1.
  • Deleted Scenes (1080p, 6:35 total runtime): A handful of scenes that, as presented here, lack titles or context or any marker of where they belong in the season. Fans will be able to mentally piece them in, but leaving that basic information out is a disappointing oversight.
  • Inside Fear the Walking Dead (1080p): A collection of short features that quickly cover a broad spectrum of information pertaining to each episode, including basic story arcs, characters, themes, and more. Included are Pilot (5:54), So Close, Yet So Far (4:58), The Dog (5:03), Not Fade Away (4:48), Cobalt (5:32), and The Good Man (4:46).
  • Fear: The Beginning (1080p, 10:13): A quick summary of the show's approach to showcasing the beginnings of the zombie apocalypse, character trait basics, and more.
  • Five things You Need to Survive (1080p, 2:17): A few folks from the cast discuss what they would want to have with them during the apocalypse.
  • Locations: LA and Vancouver (1080p, 6:56): A rapid-fire look at the series' two key shooting locations.
  • Quarantined (1080p, 6:36): This supplement looks at the military's role in the season and the story lines and themes that emerge from its presence.
  • Stunts and Anarchy (1080p, 6:59): A look at making a few key stunts from the season.
  • The Faces of Fear (1080p, 5:15): A main character rundown and highlight reel.
  • The Infected (1080p, 4:48): A detailed look at zombie makeup and the thought process that went into zombie design.

Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

This special edition of Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season offers the series' super-fans an opportunity to re-buy with all of the special features that should have been included in the first place. The supplements are fine, nothing groundbreaking and nothing that screams "worthy of a double dip," which this is, and of the worst kind; it feels like all the extras were held just to re-release to coincide with the season two premiere. New buyers are obviously going to want to get this rather than the first release, but for those already enjoying the first Blu-ray release the extras alone don't justify a second purchase.
