Overview

Fallout: Season One 4K (2024)

Based on one of the greatest video games of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them above.

Starring: Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, Moisés Arias, Walton Goggins

Fallout: Season One 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Apocalypse Soon.

Reviewed by Randy Miller III July 9, 2025

Offered alongside separate Blu-ray and standard 4K editions, Warner Bros. (in conjunction with Amazon MGM Studios) also has an Amazon-exclusive 4K Steelbook variant of their breakout hit Fallout: Season One. It's basically identical to the standard 4K edition linked above, featuring the same on-disc content including outstanding A/V merits and a solid assortment of bonus features (for an MGM title, at least), with only cosmetic packaging differences and an elusive "Limited Edition" status working in its favor. If you can snag this one before it's gone, congratulations!

For my thoughts on Fallout: Season One, please see my recent review of the standard 4K edition.

For separate write-ups of Fallout's 2160p/HDR10/Dolby Vision and 1080p transfers, please see my separate reviews of the standard 4K edition and the Blu-ray set, which is where these 1080p screenshots are sourced from.

My thoughts about the terrific Dolby Atmos audio can be found in my recent review of the standard 4K edition.

Fallout: Season One 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

This three-disc set ships in a matte-finish Steelbook case whose only crime is recycling cover art from the standard 4K edition, but it's at least opened up thanks to the lack of banners. The back cover reveals more of an improvement, as there's a striking image of The Ghoul and ever-faithful pup CX404 (AKA "Dogmeat") in a doorway. Inside is a weathered image of Vault Boy offering a reassuring thumbs-up with the propagandic claim "Vault-Tec is Building a Brighter Future, Underground!" next to him. The three discs sit on adjacent hubs, one overlapping, which thankfully means there's no stacking involved. Also shrink-wrapped to the Steelbook is a glossy white envelope bearing the show's logo that holds a handful of exclusive art cards. It's a solid package overall, even if different cover art would've been ideal.

No Digital Copy is included (not a surprise), but we do get an identical set of extras as detailed in my 4K review.

DISC ONE

  • Audio Commentary - Episode 1 ("The End"), with director Jonathan Nolan and actor Walton Goggins.

DISC THREE

  • Inside Episode 1 (68:03) - A video recording of the above commentary, nothing more.

  • Behind-the-Scenes Featurettes

    • Inside Season One (18:02)

    • Creating the Wasteland (3:46)

    • Safe and Sound (2:37)

    • Set Your Sets on 2296 (2:23)

    • The Costumes of Fallout (2:43)

    • Writing for the Wasteland (2:26)

    • Meet the Filmmaker (and Fanatic) Jonathan Nolan (3:04)

    • Prosthetics & Makeup Gone Nuclear (2:47)

    • Becoming The Ghoul (2:08)

    • Console to Camera (2:52)

    • Welcome to the World of Fallout (2:41)

Fallout: Season One 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Soon entering its second season, Amazon/MGM's well-received adaptation of Fallout makes for great TV and should appeal to die-hard fans of the franchise and newcomers alike. Small speed bumps are present during this eight-episode first season, but it's an impressive run overall and features great characters, absolutely top-tier production design, and staggering attention to detail. Now available on separate Blu-ray and standard 4K editions as well as this 4K Steelbook variant, all have overwhelmingly good A/V merits and a healthy set of extras. Very Highly Recommended.
