Evil Bong 666 (2017)

When a blood sacrifice opens a portal to hell, Ebee is returned to Earth where Lucy Furr, the new proprietor of her weed shop, has some sinister plans of her own. Before Ebee's dreams of world domination can be satisfied she will need to employ the help of Rabbit and The Gingerdead Man. Channeling their inner Dr. Frankenstein, Ebee and Rabbit create The Gingerweed Man: a tiny, patchwork monster made from the greatest strains of weed on Earth. Evil Bong 666 Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman November 1, 2021

Note: This film is also available as part of The Evil Bong Stash Box.

Marijuana continues to be legalized or at least decriminalized in any number of states (including in Oregon, where I live), so the need for a "stash box" may be a relic of the past, but leave it to the venerable Charles Band to recycle his Evil Bong series with just such a packaging conceit, which does in fact contain two side "vestibules" to hold any, um, extras, with a center section given over to nine Blu-ray discs. Some of the Evil Bong series either have had or are about to have standalone releases, but those wanting the "whole joint" (to paraphrase Spike Lee's use of that term) may want to spring for this admittedly pricey set, if only to also get the stash box itself. The films themselves are a mixed lot, and some may feel that a generous supply of whatever is stored in those side compartments might need to be consumed in order to enjoy things appropriately.

Evil Bong 666 received a previous release on Blu-ray from Full Moon Features a few years ago, and for those wanting a recap, I refer you to my colleague Martin Liebman's Evil Bong 666 Blu-ray review of that version (which seems identical to this version).

Evil Bong 666 Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Evil Bong 666 is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Full Moon Features with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. This appears to be the same release as Marty reviewed, but in my continuing mantra of "different reviewers means different opinions", I'm perhaps just slightly more pleased with the overall appearance of this release than Marty was. Now, anyone coming to any of the Evil Bong films is probably going to know they are micro budgeted affairs that rarely show much in the way of production niceties, but on the whole the digital capture here offers secure detail levels and some especially good fine detail in some outdoor material. The palette pops appealingly throughout, aided by some over the top "design" elements in terms of some of the costuming. CGI isn't exactly mind blowing, but within the context of this series as a whole, looks pretty good, all things considered.

Evil Bong 666 Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  3.0 of 5

Marty and I agree that the decision to release this film with only a lossy Dolby Digital 2.0 track is disappointing, but as with all of the other films in this set, within the context of a lossy offering, things sound decent enough. The stereo rendering may not be hugely wide, but it provides capable if not exactly mind and/or ear blowing support for the film's patently ridiculous dialogue, occasionally goofy sound effects, and score. There are no subtitles available on any of the films in this set.

Evil Bong 666 Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.0 of 5

As mentioned above, this is for all intents and purposes the same release as the one reviewed by Martin Liebman several years ago. See Marty's review, linked to above, for more information on these supplements.

  • The Smoke of Hell (HD; 12:09)
  • Breaking Into Sexy Hell (HD; 11:48)
  • Spotlight: Robin Sydney (HD; 5:18)

  • Where Bad Girls Go (HD; 00:34)

  • A Sonny Goodbye (HD; 2:27)

  • Trailers includes Evil Bong 666 (HD; 1:18), along with trailers for other releases from Full Moon Picutres.

Evil Bong 666 Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  2.0 of 5

Once again it may be the naked women in attendance who generate the most interest for some fans in this pretty tired excuse for a "stoner horror comedy". Video is generally solid, but this release doesn't even offer the relative allure of a lossy surround track, instead featuring only Dolby Digital 2.0 audio. This release has some decent if brief supplements, for anyone who may be considering making a purchase.
