Note: This film is available as part of The Evil
Bong Stash Box.
Marijuana continues to be legalized or at least decriminalized in any number of states (including in Oregon, where I live), so the need for a "stash box"
may be a relic of the past, but leave it to the venerable Charles Band to recycle his Evil Bong series with just such a packaging conceit,
which does in fact contain two side "vestibules" to hold any, um, extras, with a center section given over to nine Blu-ray discs. Some of the
Evil Bong series either have had or are about to have standalone releases, but those wanting the "whole joint" (to paraphrase Spike
Lee's use of that term) may want to spring for this admittedly pricey set, if only to also get the stash box itself. The films themselves are a mixed lot,
and some may feel that a generous supply of whatever is stored in those side compartments might need to be consumed in order to enjoy
things appropriately.
Evil Bong 3: The Wrath of Bong is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Full Moon Features with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. As I mentioned in our Evil Bong 2: King Bong Blu-ray review, technical data on this series is pretty hard to come by, but I'm assuming this is a digital capture, and I can't imagine it wasn't finished at 2K. The results are decent in a television kind of way, with a nicely suffused palette and generally very good detail levels. The opening CGI is actually pretty good within the overall context of this series, and it's obvious that at least a few effects may have been designed with 3D in mind, though, as mentioned above, this is a "flat" presentation.
As with many of the other films in this set, only Dolby Digital 2.0 and 5.1 mixes are offered, and the disc defaults to the stereo track. Once again surround activity on the 5.1 track can be limited, perhaps noticeably more so with regard to this set bound offering which doesn't even have the outdoor ambience that pervaded Evil Bong 2: King Bong . That said, dialogue, effects and score are all rendered decently enough within a lossy context. There are no subtitles available on any of the films in this set.
I almost got the feeling there was some unused corner of some room that Charles Band had access to, and he just decided then and there to fashion yet another Evil Bong outing. This third film evidently had a 3D presentation somewhere, but even that perception of depth is missing here, and, as stated above, this film is "flat" in more ways than one. Video is generally solid, but audio is once again lossy. Supplements are once again on the brief side, for anyone who may be considering making a purchase.
