Erotic Ghost Story III Blu-ray Movie Review

Erotic Ghost Story III is the third installment in the Hong Kong adult film series. Produced by Chun-Tung Chow (Saga of the Phoenix, Thunderbolt), Erotic Ghost Story III is a Category III adult feature. Executive produced by Lam Chua (Mr. Nice Guy, A Chinese Torture Chamber Story), Erotic Ghost Story III stars Pauline Chan, Tak-Bun Wong, Shing Fui-On, King-Man Chik, Ching-Wah Cheung, Rena Otomo, Ka-Kui Ho, and Aki Tanzawa.

Chu Chung (Tak-Bun Wong) is a skilled swordsman who is already in an arranged marriage. Chu is in a relationship but he lusts after the far more beautiful woman that he sees in a mystical portrait: Wan Yee-Mung (Pauline Chan). Chu enlists Reverend Wick (Shing Fui-On) to help him traverse across the portrait and into the other dimension to find the beautiful woman.

Chu has gone from the human world to the spirit world. Now seeking the beautiful Wan, Chu also faces challenges when a demon overlord decides he shouldn’t be able to return home. Despite the setbacks of the demon world, Chu finds a possibility for a great number of sexual encounters and orgies.

Tak-Bun Wong and Pauline Chan offer decent leading performances in the feature. The supporting cast of characters includes Liu See-See (King- Man Chik), Witch (Ching-Wah Cheung), Vixen (Rena Otomo), Chia Yuen (Ka-Kui Ho), and Witch's Girl (Aki Tanzawa). The supporting cast provide solid performances, too.

The production features excellent design elements. Erotic Ghost Story III highlights the art direction by Yin Fang (Five Lonely Hearts, Naked Killer). The production design elements are excellent and some of the greatest components of the feature-film. Erotic Ghost Story III is a well-done production.

The costume designs by Ping Tong (Fight Back to School, The Kung Fu Scholar) are well-done for Erotic Ghost Story III. The costumes are one of the most effective elements of the entire production. The designs by Tong provide excellent detail to the cast of characters.

The cinematography by Bill Wong (Once Upon a Time in China, The Last Affair) is beautiful and lush throughout. The visual style is organic and visually compelling. There is a lot of wonder to the film presentation.

Composed by Tats Lau (Timeless Romance, Temptation of a Monk), Erotic Ghost Story III has an effective and engaging score. Lau is a talented composer. The music is one of the strengths of the filmmaking. A worthwhile effort by Lau.

Edited by Peter Cheung (The Way of the Dragon, Fist of Fury) and Wang-Hung Ng (Thunderbolt, When a Man Loves a Woman), Erotic Ghost Story III is well-paced. The editing style is impressive and the film flows with a serene style that makes the production more impressive. Cheung handled the edit well.

The stunts by Phillip Chung-Fung Kwok (The Bride with White Hair, The Sword Stained with Royal Blood) are well- done and are on par with traditional (non-adult) martial arts cinema. These fight stunts are some of the best moments in the film. The action is in some respects more impressive than either previous installment in the Erotic Ghost Story III film series.

Written by Gen'ichi Rikuta, Erotic Ghost Story III is the weakest script in the Erotic Ghost Story film series. Unfortunately, the script is not a highlight. The story and dialogue are not are good or well-written in comparison to other installments. Much of the comedy is poorly done as well. The script feels truly lackluster – despite other impressive aspects of the production.

Directed by Kai-Ming Lai (Daughter of Darkness, The Peeping Tom), Erotic Ghost Story III is a decent installment. Erotic Ghost Story III is not as entertaining as the two preceding Erotic Ghost Story features. There are some great production elements and well-done sex scenes, but in other respects the film feels a little lackluster by comparison. The filmmaking is simply not on the same level as the other two films in the series.

Erotic Ghost Story III Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Released on Blu-ray by Shout Factory, Erotic Ghost Story III is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 widescreen. The high-definition transfer provides a solid presentation of the feature-film. There is a lot of good detail present in the encode. Shout Factory has done an admirable job – providing a good presentation of the feature.

Erotic Ghost Story III Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality 

The Blu-ray release is presented in Cantonese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono (with English subtitles). The release has excellent sounding lossless audio. Dialogue is clear and easy to understand. The audio provides a crisp presentation of the soundtrack. The sound effects are also well emphasized. The English subtitles are well-done and are free from egregious spelling or grammatical errors.

Erotic Ghost Story III Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Erotic Ghost Story III is an entertaining if somewhat mixed third installment in the franchise. The third entry in the adult film series is not as good as the first two installments. There are still some good sex scenes and the production elements are impressive.

The Blu-ray release provides a nice high-definition transfer and lossless audio encoding. The release also includes a selection of bonus features – including an audio commentary, an alternate cut, an interview with critic James Mudge, and more. Recommended.
