Erotic Adventures of Candy Blu-ray Movie Review

Keeping with the spirit of most adult movies from the 1970s, “Erotic Adventures of Candy” follows a bubbly innocent learning a thing or two about the ways of the world through numerous sexual partners. It’s a routine that’s disrupted by writer/director Gail Palmers, who tries to class up the joint by taking inspiration from Voltaire’s French farce, “Candide,” and there’s a charming lead turn from Carol Connors, whose daffy work as a blonde bombshell finally losing her virginity is surprisingly lively, helping “Erotic Adventures of Candy” sustain its freewheeling tone.

The buxom Connors is the helmer’s primary weapon, keeping the star nude and on the move as her character, the titular explorer, goes out into the world in search of sexuality. She’s not especially bright, but her beaming attitude always wins out in the end, using her visual appeal to seduce gardener Manuel (Don Fernando) and satisfy her Uncle Dick (Eddy Cannon), while her measurements are catnip to neighborhood creep Sean (John Holmes) and spiritual guru Graham (Paul Thomas). While bedroom antics are mostly fun and games, Candy also has a particularly creepy encounter with Dr. Fillmore (John Leslie), a gynecologist who takes advantage of his patient’s naiveté during a brief appointment. Mercifully, Palmer (who also appears in the first scene to introduce the picture) doesn’t play the moment with any mean-spiritedness, pulling out of the tonal tailspin at just the right time.

The AVC encoded image (1.78:1 aspect ratio) presentation preserves the basic visual interests of "Erotic Adventures of Candy" with splendid attention to detail, pushing the original cinematography as far as it can go, battling inherent softness and focus issues. Graphic displays of skin are filled with different textures and particulars, and costuming (especially sheer outfits) also comes through as needed. Colors are refreshed to satisfaction, handling bold primaries and natural skintones. Delineation isn't challenged, but blacks retain depth. Source has its share of scratches but no major points of damage.

The 1.0 DTS-HD MA sound mix is a basic listening experience, with most attention on dialogue exchanges, which never reach completely clarity, battling slight fuzziness. However, intelligibility is never threatened, and comedic extremes are preserved. Scoring is enjoyable without real definition, maintaining the feature's sunny day mood. Hiss is detected throughout, and a few harsh reel changes are encountered.

If you're one to follow the story of "Erotic Adventures of Candy," the saga doesn't actually end here. Concluding abruptly, Palmer returns with images from "Candy Goes to Hollywood," promising a wilder experience the second time around. Thankfully, the production sets up the mystery with care, keeping "Erotic Adventures of Candy" buoyant and amusing, smartly relying on Connors to carry the picture with her special softness.
