Director Baz Luhrmann poured his heart and soul into the creation of 2022’s “Elvis.” The picture was an offering of crazy energy at times, with the helmer trying to replicate the fury surrounding the arrival and the extended fame of Elvis Presley, using all the tools in his moviemaking arsenal to leave audiences breathless and his own fandom exhausted. However, Luhrmann wasn’t exactly done with the ways of Elvis after the film became a global hit, inspired to do something new with old footage unearthed for the not-really-a-bio-pic, endeavoring to bring the Elvis experience back to the public. “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” is a documentary about the performer and his relationship with the stage, examining the star in the early 1970s, when he returned to public performing after losing his way professionally during the previous decade. It’s not an especially deep slice of information from Luhrmann, but it delivers a powerful understanding of Elvis’s stage presence, watching The King do his thing in front of frenzied audiences.

The opening 20 minutes of “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” is devoted to summarizing what the singer was going through before his concert career resumed. Interviews with Elvis guide the journey, exploring his early R&B possession, which sent him quaking in front of overwhelmed fans, turning his music into the dominating sound of the 1950s. There’s condemnation from church leaders and complete acceptance from young audiences, and this career momentum was throttled when Elvis was drafted into the army, leaving him to service while the world moved on. “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” also inspects the Hollywood years, pushed into moviemaking to keep himself visible, losing touch with his performance side in the process.

“EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” mentions Elvis’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, but doesn’t investigate his parasitic ways, with Luhrmann preferring to emphasize the excitement of the singer as he returns to public view. The picture eventually turns over to music, and cameras capture Elvis rehearsing with his band, trying to work through songs without completely goofing around. While “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” is about touring, the feature mostly focuses on The King’s stand at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, ready to rock a room filled with fans and celebrities, including Sammy Davis Jr. and Cary Grant. The performances provided here are explosive and deeply felt, with the documentary laboring to remind viewers that Elvis pushed himself to the limit to entertain others, becoming a sweaty mess as he wraps himself around rock and gospel tunes. Part of the humor of the movie is found during these sequences, as female attendees often lose their mind at the sight of Elvis, and the star isn’t shy when it comes to kissing these ladies, working his way through the room to do so.

“EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” also tracks The King as he tours America, dazzling arena audiences while participating in press conferences, dealing with interviewers trying to pull something more revealing out of the star. Performances in this section of the picture are just as engaging, but Luhrmann has a few nasty habits on display, often interrupting songs to pack in additional thoughts from Elvis. Backstage and playtime footage is welcome, working to show off the performer’s happier side, but “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” isn’t a true concert movie event. It jumps around quite a bit, though when momentum is needed, Luhrmann nails the towering power of Elvis in motion.

The production loves color, and the viewing experience remains vivid throughout, embracing the brightness of stage lighting, which deliver big reds and blues. Costuming is also a highlight, embracing Elvis's love of ornate outfits, including the sharp whites of his International Hotel clothing choices. More varied hues are found with period styling, extending to golden eyewear and paisley shirts. Skin tones are natural. Detail emerges with the freshly scanned (but heavily augmented) footage, exploring skin particulars on Elvis, capturing beads of sweat and fine hairs. Performance venues are expansive, maintaining dimension, allowing viewers to explore the crowds. Interiors are deep, visiting rehearsal spaces. Blacks are secure, preserving lighting choices and the dramatic value of darkness during concert displays. Compression largely holds together, with some banding detected along the way.

The 5.1 DTS-HD MA mix handles with authority. "EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert" is mostly about the music, but stretches of interview audio are present, and thoughts from the star are crisply represented, along with questioning from reporters. Stage performances are the big show here, and they deliver a full sense of instrumentation, blended well with clear vocals. Surrounds are active throughout the listening event, creating a circular feel for musical numbers. Atmospherics are playful, exploring audience reactions with some separation effects. Low-end preserves percussion support with welcome heaviness at times.

"EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert" blends footage from previous Elvis documentaries while introducing fresh footage into the flow of the endeavor. Perhaps longtime fans might feel some déjà vu with the feature, but there doesn't seem to be much recycling, as Luhrmann is committed to crafting something new for the devoted. The picture does get overdramatic as it hunts for a conclusion, ending with a poem from Bono, but Luhrmann is clearly trying to turn this movie into an emotional experience. And maybe it will be for some, but "EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert" is undeniable as a document of Elvis's performance skills, clarity of voice, and enjoyment of the spotlight, handed a few hours a night to dominate audiences and, if time and accessibility allows, lock lips with most of them.
