End of a Gun Blu-ray Movie Review
End of a "career".
Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman December 14, 2016
Humphrey Bogart gave the film world one of its most memorable lines when he told Ingrid Bergman “We’ll always have Paris” in Casablanca. Alas, Paris is one of the few selling points in End of
a Gun, and it’s perhaps indicative of this film’s lackluster approach that the City of Lights is introduced only by establishing shots, since End of a
Gun was evidently actually shot in Romania. That may also provide a bit of unintended comedy to the proceedings, though it’s worth noting that
it’s never quite clear whether we’re supposed to be laughing at the idiocy that’s often on display in yet another throwaway Steven Seagal feature.

The “plot” of
End of a Gun concerns former DEA Agent Decker (Steven Seagal, naturally) who breaks up an ugly fight between a goon and babe
named Lisa (Jade Ewen), ultimately killing the woman’s attacker. It of course turns out that Lisa has a few secrets up her fashionable sleeve, but she
enlists Decker to aid her in recovering millions of illicit Euros. Of course the pair are chased by both bad guys and a cop buddy of Decker’s. This is by the
numbers (made for television?) filmmaking that doesn’t even offer much in the way of action sequences, perhaps due to Seagal’s increasing portliness.
End of a Gun Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality

End of a Gun is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Lionsgate Films with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.39:1. This is actually a rather nice
looking transfer, at least in the more brightly lit moments. There are occasional sharpness differentiations between some of what I assume is stock
footage (i.e., establishing shots) and the bulk of the presentation, but close-ups provide excellent fine detail and the palette looks natural. Some of the
darker scenes suffer from digital murk, but there aren't any real compression issues to detail in this review.
End of a Gun Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality

End of a Gun's lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix is a bit underwhelming, at least for what is ostensibly an action adventure flick. Occasional
bone crunching elements sound decent enough, but the low end on this track is rather anemic. Dialogue (such as it is) is rendered cleanly and clearly
and there are no problems with distortion, dropouts or other damage.

End of a Gun Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

Seagal seems content to mumble through any number of straight to video releases at this stage of what is left of his career. End of a Gun offers
some nice scenery (including the gorgeous Ewen), but it's resolutely predictable every step of the way (including the mind blowing "twist" at the end).
Technical merits are fine for video and okay if a bit tepid for audio for those considering a purchase.
