Encanto 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Randy Miller III February 11, 2022

Released alongside the standard 4K edition and a separate Best Buy 4K Steelbook, Disney and Target have collaborated on an exclusive 4K variant edition of their latest animated film, Encanto. Like recent Target exclusives, it unfortunately amounts to nothing more than a deluxe slipcover with a few printed goodies inside... but the film's bold visual style really suits this type of artwork-driven variant, and the alternate cover design is pretty nice too.

For a synopsis of the main feature, please read Marty Liebman's review of the standard 4K edition.

Encanto 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

This two-disc set ships in a standard dual-hubbed keepcase with a deluxe slipcover (detailed below); a Digital Copy redemption slip is also tucked inside. The bonus features are identical to the wide release.

  • Exclusive Packaging - Although the interior keepcase is identical to the wide release, Target's edition includes a rather nice-looking variant cover design. It's unmistakably still character- driven but showcases the Madrigal family home in greater detail... even though protagonist Mirabel is still making that stupid Dreamworks face. The other panels feature one character apiece with lightly detailed backgrounds; Isabela and Luisa share the fold-out interior panels, while Antonio gets the back cover to himself. Also tucked inside the left-hand interior panel (behind Isabela) are four lithographs; seen above, these matte-finish prints are roughly the size of a regular keepcase and vaguely described as being the result of "Columbian Artist Collaborations". (After some digging, it turns out the credited artists are Catalina Estrada, Sebas Pakui, Diana Ordonez, and Johnny Nuņez; more info about them can be seen here.) Overall, it's a colorful effort and suits the film's style nicely.

Encanto 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Encanto is a lively, well-made animated production that stands as one of Disney's better efforts in recent years. It looks great on 4K and the bonus features are decent too, although the Dolby Atmos mix sounds surprisingly underpowered as far as LFE goes. Either way, it'll still run circles around any streaming version so, assuming you and your kids will watch this more than once (and they will, believe me), the 4K version is the way to go. Target's exclusive edition adds some nice design elements to their variant fold-out slipcover including colorful character artwork and four mini lithographs; if that sounds like a worthwhile upgrade for the $5 price difference, grab a copy while they're still available.
