The beloved tale of Dumbo is revisited with a family-friendly live-action adaptation of the animated Disney classic. Bringing visionary director Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) to the table, the tragic story of the sweet-natured circus elephant Dumbo losing his mother and being treated as a mere spectacle nick-named “Dumbo” by crass audiences, the story explores both the wonders of entertainment and its sometimes unavoidable pitfalls. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast of stars which includes the great Danny DeVito, the iconic Michael Keaton, the hipster Colin Farrell, and the beautiful Eva Green, Dumbo is a live-action adaptation worth seeing and sharing with the whole family.
Nothing's dumb(o) about 3D. A superb presentation.

Dumbo arrives with a stunning 3D Blu-ray presentation which is sure to please enthusiasts of the 3D format. The release is presented in the original 1.85:1 widescreen theatrical aspect ratio. The 1080p MPEG-4 MVC encoded high definition presentation is a technical marvel with excellent depth to enhance the experience. There are not a ton of "pop-out" 3D moments (though there are still a few moments sprinkled throughout) but for the most part this is a superb presentation which emphasizes added depth for the image. The CGI imagery looks impressive on the presentation and the colorful cinematography is not hampered by having an image that appears too dark for the 3D.
Though the added 3D effect is the work of a conversion, the end result is surprisingly robust and again demonstrates how much improvement has been made to 3D conversions over the years. This is not a lackluster 3D conversion by any means and the presentation is top-notch. Though there are a few sequences where the 3D feels more subdued (mainly during drama scenes), the action and high-spectacle moments have exceptionally realized 3D that helps to bring one closer to the story. It's astonishing to see Dumbo soaring through the skies and to see the imaginative world of director Tim Burton enhanced by the creative use of the 3D medium. This presentation expands Burton's vision to new heights and reminds one of why 3D is an essential filmmaking tool. A must-see 3D experience.
The release includes a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio sound presentation. Though the track lacks the same degree of bass reproduction which one might desire, the highs in the track come through with superb clarity and definition. This is not a perfect track (but an enjoyable one nonetheless). The release does not contain the Dolby Atmos track found on the 4K edition. For more information, please refer to the review by my colleague Martin Liebman.
The supplemental package on the 3D edition remains completely the same as what is included on the standard Blu-ray edition (and there are no exclusive supplemental features found on the 3D disc). These extras are provided on the standard Blu-ray disc included in the combo pack. For more information, please refer to the extras section on the review by my colleague Martin Liebman.
Though Tim Burton's adaptation of Dumbo might not be an outright classic (and it again shows how the filmmaker suffers somewhat at bringing something completely new to the table with regards to his attempts at making remakes and adaptations), the creative-stamp of Burton's unusual and distinctive style still adapts well to the material and helps the film to be a entertaining experience. The cast are uniformly impressive in their respective roles (it's a genuine blast getting to see both Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito reunited with Burton post Batman Returns) and the inspired special effects are extraordinary. The 3D gives a boost to the filmmaking and makes the journey more entertaining. This is an immersive experience which is a must-see for all 3D enthusiasts.
