Dracula Sucks 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf March 7, 2022

I’m sure if author Bram Stoker was made aware of what the future held for his 1897 novel, “Dracula,” he would be delighted. There have been movies, T.V. shows, comic books, video games, and entire state fair midway rides devoted to his creation, keeping the brand name going for over a century of horror escapism. Perhaps less appealing to Stoker would be the creation of 1979’s “Dracula Sucks,” the adult film industry’s take on the novel, which transports the gothic, nightmarish tale from Transylvania to the dry, sunny surroundings of rural California, adding bits of comedy and blindfolded editing to summon another take on Stoker’s vision of terror and seduction.

Dracula Sucks 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  5.0 of 5

Originally released on Blu-ray in 2018, "Dracula Sucks" graduates to a 4K presentation in this new release from Vinegar Syndrome. The original disc provided an enticing look at the particulars of the movie, but the UHD is a clear upgrade, offering stronger, nuanced colors, hitting larger displays of red accurately. Costuming offers varied primaries, and white medical outfits are crisply defined. Detail is exceptional, exploring rougher skin surfaces and fibrous clothing. Fine hairs are present as well. Blacks are rich, capturing shadowy encounters and thick robes and capes. Highlights are tasteful, securing warm sunshine and moody candlelight. Grain is nicely resolved, remaining thicker but film-like. Source is in excellent condition.

Dracula Sucks 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA is an improvement over the previous release of "Dracula Sucks," though this is still a listening event that's not supported by the finest in technical achievements. Age remains apparent, but dialogue exchanges are satisfactory, exploring the range of thespians presented here, and their varying skill levels. Music supports are intended, with a slightly muddier sense of instrumentation, which seems inherent to the original track.

Dracula Sucks 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

  • Commentary features actor and co-writer Bill Margold.
  • "Return to Castle Hill" (22:04, HD) is a 2014 featurette following Bill Margold and producer Darryl Marshak as they return to the locations used for the shooting of "Dracula Sucks." Along the way, the men trade tales about the cast and the movie, and they make a plan to access the castle from the feature, which isn't as easy as it originally seems.
  • "Lust at First Bite" (74:51, HD) is a second cut of "Dracula Sucks," featuring over 40 minutes of alternate footage.
  • "Potluck" (43:51, HD) is a 1970 short film from director Dan Gordon.
  • "Ruben's Revenge" (12:13, SD) is a 1971 short film from director Phillip Marshak.
  • Still Gallery (1:46) collects German poster art, lobby cards, and film stills.
  • And a Theatrical Trailer (3:08, HD) is included.

Dracula Sucks 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

"Dracula Sucks" is a worthy upgrade from Vinegar Syndrome, who return to the title armed with a fresh list of supplements, and improved A/V, preserving the feature's artistic goals.
