Dr. Seuss' The Grinch Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman February 13, 2019

Universal and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook for the 2018 digitally animated film 'Dr. Seuss' The Grinch.' The SteelBook is home to a Blu-ray copy of the film, which is of course identical to the one distributed in wide release packaging. The film was also made available on the Blu-ray 3D and 4K UHD formats but there are presently no SteelBook options with either or both of those discs inside. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more information.

So very, very, green! Green is unsurprisingly the dominant color for Best Buy's exclusive SteelBook of Dr. Seuss' The Grinch. The front cover features the green grinch, comically contemplating his next scheme, against a green backdrop that is nearly the same color. It works, though (even with the character slightly off-center). The rear side is equally green, almost entirely so, with Grinch's dog Max sniffing around at the bottom-left corner, right above some unobtrusive fine print. The spine is similarly, yup, green, with the film's title center in small black print, save for the word "Grinch," which is larger and presented in a shade of deeper offsetting green. A Universal logo appears at the bottom. The entire exterior is very minimalist, but it certainly makes a statement. It looks great. The finish is glossy-smooth. It is prone to fingerprinting but with the green coloring they don't stand out like a sore (green) thumb(print).

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand side tabs. The two discs, one Blu-ray and one DVD, are housed on the right, staggered-stacked. The interior two-panel presentation spread features Grinch sitting on a sofa contemplating something, with a look on his face that is a little more serious, maybe even dour, compared to the playful grin on the opposite side. The right-hand side simply extends the red sofa. It's smart to see Universal and Best Buy break up the green on the inside; while it works outside, so much more on the inside might have just been too much (and with the Grinch and the two green discs, there's plenty as-is).

Dr. Seuss' The Grinch Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

This is a very attractive SteelBook. Green, green, and more green dominates the exterior in what is one of the most prominent, eye-catching SteelBooks on the market. It's a very enjoyable alternative to the wide release packaging, but it's a shame Universal and Best Buy did not give fans the choice to pick up the film in 3D or 4K in a SteelBook home. Recommended.
