Doctor Who Limited Edition New Who Collector's Set Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman January 26, 2024

Over a decade ago, BBC offered devoted Whovians the immense Doctor Who: Complete Series 1-7 set, which rather incredibly included a so-called "sonic screwdriver" as a bit of non-disc swag, something that probably made that set an instant collector's item, at least for a certain demographic (the fact that it's still listed on Amazon at close to $500 may be indicative of its allure). This immense set offers what are kinda sorta like Funko-esque figurines as its non- disc swag, but it also offers newly upscaled versions of the first four seasons/series, and new interviews with Russell T. Davies and David Tennant.

For reviews of the seasons/series included in this set, please click on the following links. Almost all of these seasons/series have had previous reviews, though some seasons/series that Ken Brown reviewed were evidently subsequently released in remastered versions, and as mentioned before, the first four seasons have been newly upscaled. Due to the vagaries of how BBC has released the many series/seasons of Doctor Who over the years and how our reviews have been written, three individual series/seasons have had no prior separate reviews, namely Series Two, Three and Four, so I've provided reviews for those, linked below. Previously (individually) unreviewed seasons/series are marked with an asterisk. I've tried diligently to provide links to everything in this set, but because BBC has had such an almost willfully random way of releasing both series, specials, and collections, I may have missed something, and if so, readers are encouraged to private message me and I'll update things accordingly here.

Supplements included with each series/season are detailed in the above linked reviews. Additionally, the final disc in this set offers the following new supplement:

  • Doctor Who Recollections with Russell and David (HD; 18:04) is a really sweet reminiscence that should delight longtime fans of the show.
A frankly kind of flimsy box measuring approximately 12" wide x 8" high x 5" deep holds four huge multidisc keepcases, as well as a separate box holding five Funko-esque "Titan" figurines representing the doctors in this set. The keepcases offer discs stacked on spindles, and I will probably surprise no one by saying my set arrived with many loose discs, and in fact getting the discs on and off the spindles is something of a chore at times.

Doctor Who Limited Edition New Who Collector's Set Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Will five Funko-esque "Titan" figurines have the drawing power of a sonic screwdriver? Only time and/or time lords will tell. This set will probably have both pluses and minuses for many Doctor Who fans. For those who haven't invested in each and every series/season aggregated here, this is a relatively budget friendly way to complete a collection, and BBC is to be commended for at least attempting to make the first four series/seasons look a little better, even if the results aren't overly revelatory. On the minus side, there's only one new on disc supplement, and the packaging may drive some people nuts, considering how difficult it can be to either mount or dismount the stacked discs on the spindles in the keepcases. Taken as a whole, though, the positives outweigh the negatives, and the New Who Collector's Set comes Recommended.
