District 9 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman November 7, 2020

Sony and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive UHD SteelBook release for Director Neill Blomkamp's 2009 Sci-Fi film 'District 9.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the concurrently issued wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

District 9 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.5 of 5

Sony's District 9 SteelBook, which is flat rather than smooth and glossy, predominantly includes three colors: red, white, and black. The front and rear panels are designed to replicate "warning" or "prohibited" posters. The front depicts a Prawn, black with reflective silvery "tentacles" on its face, appearing center with a reflective red "cross out" or "prohibited" logo around it. In black at the top is the film's title (the number "9" is in red) and at the bottom are the words "FOR HUMANS ONLY," "Report non-humans," and "NON-HUMANS BANNED!" The front features a red border wrapping around its edge. The rear panel is identical in terms of layout with the white background, red border, and black text. In the middle in the "prohibited" logo are three aliens walking along a fence-like surface. The top includes the text "Sharing with non-humans strictly prohibited" and at the bottom "FINES WILL BE IMPOSED" and "Please report non-human viewing." The spine is flat red with the film's title in black, center (the number "9" is in white). A Tri-Star logo has been placed at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features an actual image rather than Sony's usual monochromatic layout. It depicts a "prison camp" scene with a Prawn nearly center in the background and, just to the right, a silhouette of a human solider standing watch in the foreground. The alien spaceship hovers at the top left corner. There are some barbed wire fences in the left background and the right foreground. The sky is a lightly golden-warm dusk color.

District 9 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

This is a cool SteelBook. It's unique, it looks great, and it feels good in the hand. The movie is one of the best of its kind and the UHD presentation is terrific. This SteelBook earns my highest recommendation.
