Digimon Adventure: Our War Game! Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Neil Lumbard February 25, 2025Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game is the second anime feature-film in the Digimon Adventure franchise. Created by Akiyoshi Hongo, Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game is an ambitious follow-up to the original Digimon Movie 1 – Digimon Adventure feature-film. Released in Japanese cinemas on March 4th, 2000.
Executive produced by Makoto Shibazaki (One Piece: The Movie, Digimon: Diaboromon Strikes Back), Tan Takaiwa (Cutey Honey Flash, Sailor Moon S: The Movie), Teruo Tamamura (One Piece: The Movie, Digimon Adventure), Tsutomu Tomari (Digimon Adventure, Sailor Moon S: The Movie), and Yasushi Mitsui (One Piece: The Movie), Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game is a must-see for fans of the anime franchise. Produced by Toei Animation (Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon S), Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game features excellent voice-performances by Ai Maeda, Atori Shigematsu, Chika Sakamoto, and Hiroko Konishi. With epic animation and production scale, Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game is a delight for Digimon devotees.
The second Digimon feature allows for Tai and Matt to take center stage as the DigiDestined spend their spring break on one of their biggest missions yet: stopping Diaboromon from creating a landscape of total chaos and destruction. Diaboromon is unleashing evil on to the internet and causing Digmon chaos. If Tai and Matt can’t defeat Diaboromon before its too late, does it mean the end of the world and the destruction of the internet? The danger spreads like the fastest growing virus imaginable and the stakes won’t subside.

The characters are back for another stunning adventure. The characters have grown up considerably since the first Digimon theatrical feature (which acted as a prequel to the first television series run). Bringing back the core lead characters, Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game provides some maturity, growth, and excitement for the characters as the main cast embarks on a new mission. These fun characters have always been at the heart of the anime and why Digimon developed such a strong, devoted, and loyal cult following in Japan and overseas.
The character designs by Hisashi Nakayama (Rainbow Fireflies) and Takaaki Yamashita (The Boy and The Beast, Crying Freeman) are impressive and add to the production values of Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game. The character designs are true to the original anime series run while having a bit of subtle and notable changes due to the higher production budget. The character designs are excellent and fans certainly will appreciate how well done this aspect of the production is. The characters remain the beloved fan-favorites audiences came to know and love.
The animation is top-notch and equally ambitious when compared to the first theatrical Digimon feature-film, Digimon Movie 1 – Digimon Adventure. Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game is a huge showcase for the animation team. The production features art direction by Mitsuo Yoshino (Bokutachi no Peace River, Knights of Sidonia: Love Woven in the Stars) and Seiki Tamura (Lupin the IIIrd: Goemon's Blood Spray, Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine). Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game also features superb animation direction by Hisashi Nakayama (Space Dandy, Rainbow Fireflies) and Takaaki Yamashita (Wolf Children, The Boy and The Beast). The animators deliver their A-game to the production. The theatrical animated film is a gem of hand drawn animation and the artistry on display is something special to behold and cherish. Fans of the anime series will appreciate the bigger budget the feature-film received and the large sense of scale given to the animation. Background animation is well detailed and the entire scope of the production feels more ambitious by nature. A beautifully animated gem.
The cinematography by Motoi Takahashi (Sailor Moon R: The Movie, Sailor Moon S: The Movie) is an essential highlight of the theatrical production. Takahashi is a talented cinematographer with a great grasp of the franchise. Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game is a visually ambitious production and one that brings theatrical flair to the anime television franchise. Though the cinematography is a bit darker and more mysterious compared to the anime series itself, the cinematography rewards with a sleek and compelling aesthetic that still manages to remain faithful to the Digimon world.
The score composed by Takanori Arisawa (Sailor Moon, Digimon Frontier) is a wonderful and essential part of the film. The score by Arisawa is exceptional and the music brings so much joy to the anime production. Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game features an incredible score – the music delivering impressive artistry in spades. The score a perfect accompaniment to the ambitious scale of the filmmaking.
Written by Reiko Yoshida (Lu over the wall, Ride Your Wave), Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game is an incredible script. The screenplay was perfectly realized. The script finds the right moments for fun character moments and comedy while establishing these components alongside the epic action-adventure at the heart of the feature. The script is a perfect showcase for what made the series a beloved classic, too. The feature script doesn’t miss a beat and is one of the best in the entire Digimon franchise.
Directed by Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars), Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game is ambitious, creative, and bold filmmaking. Hosoda crafted an incredible film and one that Digimon fans continue to cherish as a classic. The directing is top-notch and the style given to the film mesmerizes. Hosoda even showcases some similar visual styles and aesthetic qualities to his future classic Summer Wars. Digimon Movie 2: Our War Game is almost like a test run for Hosoda’s future Summer Wars classic – while remaining a perfect addition to the Digimon anime franchise. A gem.

The English dub is fantastic and well-worthwhile. Discotek certainly went the extra mile with the release. The audio is well-encoded and preserved.
One of the great things about physical media and the Blu-ray disc format is the lossless audio encoding. The lossless audio encoding is a significant advantage compared to streaming video services.
