Is it possible that South Park has a ruder, more crudely animated “cousin” on the horizon? Dick Figures has a lot of South Park’s potty mouthed insouciance, if not its inherently smart sociopolitical critiquing, but the show—which started on YouTube—has become an internet phenomenon and the show’s creators, Ed Skudder and Zack Keller, waged a successful Kickstarter campaign that easily provided crowdfunding for this first feature film. Dick Figures features two stick figures, Red and Blue (not to be confused with another internet phenomenon, Red vs. Blue), whose nascent friendship soon turns to warfare.

Blue is the straight arrow, while Red is the rabble rouser, and from that basic setup most of the comedy ensues. There are also a few supporting characters, including Blue’s girlfriend Pink and a friend known as Lord Tourettes (you can probably already guess where that character’s humor comes from), but the gist of the story here is simply the lunatic interplay between the main “odd couple”. Dick Figures is amusing in fits and starts, often in the same juvenile manner that South Park often is, but it still is a work in progress, kind of like its basically animated characters.

Dick Figures: The Movie is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Cinedigm with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. As can be surmised by the screenshots accompanying this review, this is pretty bare bones (and/or sticks) animation, aside from a couple of elements like recurrent explosions and a raccoon character that features a rotoscoped photograph. That said, this presentation is very sharp and decently detailed, given the understanding that there is purposely not much detail to begin with here. The minimal colors are quite vivid and pop nicely against the grayscale backgrounds. Line detail is clear and problem free.

Dick Figures: The Movie features DTS-HD Master Audio tracks in both 5.1 and 2.0. The 5.1 track does offer some surprisingly fulsome LFE courtesy of the aforementioned explosions, and there's decent if not outstanding surround activity throughout this film. Fidelity is just fine and offers dialogue presented very cleanly and clearly (with the exception of Lord Tourettes, for perhaps understandable reasons).

Dick Figures: The Movie Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Fans of entries like South Park or some of the Adult Swim enterprises will probably get at least a momentary kick out of Dick Figures: The Movie. Skudder and Keller are promising writing talents, but they're not quite ready for prime time—yet.
