Detonation: Violent Riders Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman July 22, 2025

If you've ever wondered what a film would look like if Russ Meyers had been born Japanese (and who amongst us hasn't?), look no further than Detonation! Violent Riders, a film whose very title contains at least one of those exclamation points so favored by the American auteur. Marauding biker gangs? Check. Completely gratuitous female nudity? Check and (dare I say?) *double* check. The only thing really missing here is Meyers' stock in trade winking attitude toward it all, though given the fact that this effort was helmed (perhaps just a bit surprisingly) by Teruo Ishii means there's no deficit in the "sexually charged" department.

As some of the supplements get into, Ishii evidently had his hands full with this film, trying to coax a believable performance out of newcomer (and real life biker) Kôichi Iwaki, here playing a character named Iwaki. Iwaki has dreams of making it big in the professional motorcycle racing world, but of course there are any number of obstacles standing in his way. The "career" side of things tends to play out here with a somewhat muddled interlocking set of either doomed or at least threatened romances, with Iwaki having his sights set on Michiko (Tomoko Ai), though her older biker brother Tsugami (Sonny Chiba) might have something to say about all of that. There are sidebars here involving what might be called internecine or at least intramural conflicts between either gangs or Iwaki and one particular gang, but really the "plot" here is almost an afterthought, with Ishii having recruited hordes of real biker gangs to, well, maraud through the frame repeatedly for no particular reason other than to provide the film with some great stunt riding.

Detonation: Violent Riders Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  3.5 of 5

Detonation! Violent Riders is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of 88 Films with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.35:1. As usual with 88 Films' releases, there's no technical information on the transfer imparted on either the insert sleeve or the booklet. This shows some signs of fading and other aging at times, with flesh tones just ever so slightly skewed toward browns at times, and with contrast occasionally wavering leading to some occasionally milky blacks. There are some variances in densities and suffusion throughout, but at its most pleasing moments, the palette pops quite nicely and detail levels are commendable. There is some very minor age related wear and tear that can be spotted. Grain resolves without any major issues.

Detonation: Violent Riders Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

Detonation! Violent Riders features LPCM 2.0 Mono audio in the original Japanese. This is an often rambunctious track with roaring motorcycles and quite a bit of period appropriate music courtesy of Keitaro Miho. The "busy ness" of the track can occasionally lead to cacophony, though aside from a few passing noisy moments typically in big crowd scenes, dialogue is rendered cleanly and clearly. Optional English subtitles (advertised as "new") are available.

Detonation: Violent Riders Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.0 of 5

  • Audio Commentary by Ashley Darrow and Jonathan Greenaway of the Horror Vanguard Podcast

  • Gangs on the Run (HD; 19:50) is a video essay by Nathan Stuart.

  • Stills Gallery (HD; 2:58)

  • Trailer (HD; 3:01)
Additionally this limited edition comes with a reversible sleeve and an insert booklet with an essay by Michelle Kisner discussing the so-called Bōsōzoku movement in both Japanese culture and film.

Detonation: Violent Riders Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

You can't help feeling that things come close to spiraling completely out of control at several key moments in this film, including what some of the supplements describe as actual near riots involving various gangs who had been assembled to take part in some of the big set pieces in the film. That gives Detonation! Violent Riders an undeniably "dangerous" energy, but unfortunately Ishii's screenplay (co-written with Isao Matsumoto) just doesn't seem to know where this particular violent ride is headed. This film actually started a new mini-franchise of sorts for Ishii and Iwaki, and I'm assuming 88 Films probably has more of the Detonation! outings on tap for future Blu-ray release. Technical merits are generally solid and the supplements enjoyable for anyone who may be considering making a purchase.
