John Waters' "Desperate Living" (1977) arrives on 4K Blu-ray courtesy of Criterion. The supplemental features on the release include new program with John Waters; new audio program with actresses Mink Stole, Susan Lowe, and Mary Vivian Pearce; archival program with designer Vincent Peranio; and more. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. Region-Free.

I know you were trying to kill me. Now go home to your mothers.

Criterion's release of Desperate Living is a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack. The 4K Blu-ray is Region-Free. However, the Blu-ray is Region-A "locked".
Please note that all screencaptures included with this article are taken from the Blu-ray. We have not provided downscaled screencaptures from the 4K Blu-ray.
The following text appears inside the leaflet provided with this release:
"Desperate Living is presented in director John Waters' preferred aspect ratio of 1.66:1. Supervised and approved by Waters, this new 4K restoration was created from the original 16mm A/B rolls, with a 35mm blow-up used for some sections. The original monaural soundtrack was remastered from the 1/4-inch magnetic track.
Mastering supervisors: Lee Kline,Giles Sherwood.
Colorist: Anthony Raffaele/Resillion, New York.
Image restoration: Prasad Corporation, Burbank, CA.
Audio restoration: The Criterion Collection."
In native 4K, the new 4K restoration can be viewed only with HDR. I viewed it in its entirety in 4K and later spent time with its 1080p presentation on the Blu-ray.
The 4K restoration and its presentations on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray are underwhelming. While all visuals are easy to describe as enormously healthy, many reveal small yet unmissable anomalies. All of these anomalies are byproducts of an unconvincing color grading job. For example, in quite a few darker areas, the dynamic range of the visuals is compromised because of tealing. You can see examples here and here. Some of the outdoor footage also has compromised highlights. Additionally, various primaries are not properly set, which is why the film has a very awkward stylized modern appearance. Most of these anomalies are also replicated on the recent 4K restoration of Testament, again finalized at Resillion. There are no traces of degraining or sharpening corrections. Image stability is excellent.

There are two standard audio tracks on this release: English LPCM 1.0 and Italian Dolby Digital 1.0. Optional English SDH (for the former) and English (for the latter) subtitles are provided.
Desperate Living does not have a prominent soundtrack, so all of the meaningful dynamic contrasts emerge during the mayhem. I would describe them as average at best. The dialogue is clear, sharp, stable, easy to follow. I did not encounter any anomalies to report in our review.

4K BLU-RAY DISC

John Waters recalls that Desperate Living was too extreme even for his fans, which is why apparently some of them remained indifferent to it. Waters may be right. However, Desperate Living simply rehashes more of the same old trashy material, and while it has a few funny moments, the sum of its parts is a pretty bad film. Criterion's combo pack introduces a new 4K restoration of it, supervised and approved by Waters. Unfortunately, this 4K restoration also replaces the native identity of Desperate Living.
