1981’s “Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle” is meant to serve as an offering of intimacy from the adult film star. Also claiming a directorial credit, Sprinkle is ready to break the fourth wall with the endeavor, inviting viewers on a tour of her fantasies and daily realities, offering vignettes instead of a narrative drive for the picture. The star is charming and unnervingly open with her private life in “Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle,” which is solely committed to exploring the actress’s tireless libido and her ability to turn any situation into something physical and somewhat haunting.

“Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle” is hosted by the star, who initially provides some biographical insight into her life (even revealing her real name). She provides sexual stats after she finally faced her fear of losing her virginity, and shows off selections from her scrapbook. These photos, assuming they’re real, explore Sprinkle’s development into maturity, showing her with friends and family, who probably have no idea their identities are being explored in the feature. Again, assuming the photos are authentic (they certainly seem to be).

Sprinkle supplies memories from her younger days (she claims to be 26 years old in the movie), reinforcing her rocket ride to sexual liberation in her hometown, eventually making her way into the adult film industry. It’s here where her needs are met, and she briefly shares a story about her time working wallpaper on a construction site, eventually claimed by her excited co-workers. However, instead of recreating the tale in “Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle,” the actress merely transitions to the first sequence of the effort, meeting two sculpted men for some company.

“Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle” follows this structure, with the actress moving from situation to situation, trying to hit all the highlights of her bedroom interests with fans, addressing the camera with her thoughts on carnal appetites. The journey found in the feature is a wild one, with Sprinkle’s famed sex drive put on full display, meeting a female co-star to indulge her breast worship fetish, while another scene spotlights Sprinkle’s own love of rear ends. Perhaps most eye-opening is an extended water sports sequence, watching Sprinkle and her partner work on staving off dehydration as they…ahem, drink from the hose. A film highlight follows the main attraction as she visits a movie theater showing one of her own pictures, happy to take on audience members who are surprised to see their object of desire in the flesh, and even more shocked when she chooses to seduce them.

“Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle” is refreshingly straight-to-the-point, keeping the star busy as she encourages her audience to masturbate with her, and she celebrates her photography skills, displayed in a scene where Sprinkle takes on a model and her watchful boyfriend. Don’t let the adventurous side of Sprinkle scare you, she’s also a regular gal, closing the picture with some “nice, delicious, old-fashioned” lovemaking with a guy named Ron.

The AVC encoded image (1.33:1 aspect ratio) presentation is listed as "newly scanned and restored in 4K from its 35mm original camera negative." There are two brief areas of concern, finding a few minutes at the 40-minute-mark hit with damage, resulting in severe judder and blurriness. The end credit scroll is also a bit yellowed. Beyond that, this is a startlingly clear viewing experience, with excellent detail that explores all kinds of fine hairs and skin particulars. Costuming retains intended sheerness and overall fibrousness. A few exteriors provide deep city depths, and interiors are open for inspection. Colors are precise, with excellent primaries on fashion choices and signage. Skin tones are natural. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is fine and film-like.

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA mix does encounter some sibilance issues, but dialogue exchanges retain clarity, and moments of passion and release never slip into distortion. Musical moods are appreciable, with decent instrumentation and emphasis to sell the mood.

Insanity or dedication? That's for viewers to decide, but "Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle" is filled with all sorts of sexual exploration and showmanship, with the star eager to highlight her skills and desires with a large assortment of co-stars. She's certainly livelier than the average X-rated performer, and her enthusiasm (and ability to read cue cards) is impressive.
