Debbie Does Dallas Part II Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf September 28, 2021

Riffing on the pop culture rise of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, 1978’s “Debbie Does Dallas” didn’t have to do much to become an adult film sensation, as long as star Bambi Woods maintained some presence in the feature while wearing an NFL-adjacent uniform. The movie was an enormous hit, giving Woods (who tried out to be an actual Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader) a major boost to her acting career. A sequel was inevitable, and eventually arrived in 1981, with “Debbie Does Dallas Part II” trying to keep a good thing going, though the follow-up weirdly drops the cheerleader storyline, keeping things episodic with Debbie and her journey of sexual curiosity.

Fresh out of cheerleading dreams in Texas, Debbie (Bambi Woods) is trying to escape the state, hoping to become a country singer like her hero, Billie Holiday. Debbie isn’t bright, but she has definite appeal to predatory men, with the woman soon making her way to Aunt Xavier (Jinger Jaye), who runs a brothel. “Debbie Does Dallas Part II” remains with Debbie and her exploration of the business, observing how fantasy rooms deliver voyeuristic thrills, and she manages to become part of the team, which is newly investigated by county police and a nosy high school football coach (Ron Jeremy).

“Debbie Does Dallas Part II” is oddly shapeless, even for an adult movie, with the production only paying marginal attention to a plot. The brothel setting invites an assortment of sexual adventures, most tied to the windowed rooms of the building, giving outsiders a chance to enjoy the show put on by employees (including some role playing between a bickering couple). There’s a vague connection to “The Best Little Whorehouse” musical, but “Debbie Does Dallas Part II” doesn’t break out into song, just couplings, watching the lead character become part of the gang, trying to save the business from outside interference.

Debbie Does Dallas Part II Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

The AVC encoded image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) presentation is sourced from a 2K scan of the original negative, giving the feature a wonderful level of clarity. Detail is sharp throughout the viewing experience, examining brothel rooms and decoration, along with costuming choices, which remain fibrous. Skin surfaces are textured, also highlighting fine hairs and rougher skin. Colors are tastefully refreshed, with a major hit of red in fantasy room interiors. Clothing maintains primary power, and skintones are natural. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is fine and film-like. Source has some scratches and speckling, and there's a noticeable frame jump at 57:12, which disrupts dialogue sync for a few seconds.

Debbie Does Dallas Part II Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA mix is a simple understanding of dialogue exchanges, which offer the usual range of adult cinema performances, with some trying a little harder than others to come off dramatic. Musical additions aren't richly defined, but the country vibe is present, with a little deeper bass and percussion, and vocals are acceptable.

Debbie Does Dallas Part II Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

The story, if there is one, doesn't end in "Debbie Does Dallas Part II," with the brand name carrying on for the next decade in multiple sequels, spinoffs ("Debbie Duz Dishes," "Debbie Does Wall Street"), cash-ins, and remakes, with each production trying to replicate the magical appeal of the 1978 endeavor. The "Debbie" brand name powered the industry for years, and the cult legacy of Bambi Woods strengthened, but there's very little imagination in "Debbie Does Dallas Part II," which doesn't double-down on possibly litigious experiences and costumes. Instead, it's an average adult film with Woods doing her daffy thing, initially in the snow (Texas?), contributing to an entertaining viewing experience, but not much of a continuation. Perhaps that's expecting too much from the producers, but the whole production seems genuinely surprised to be making a "Part II," keeping things loose as they scrounge up a reason to return.
