Alvin Rakoff's "Death Ship" (1980) arrives on 4K Blu-ray courtesy of Kino Lorber. The supplemental features on the release include new audio commentary by critics Paul Corupe and Jason Pichonsky; new audio commentary by critics Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and Josh Nelson; archival documentary on the making of the film; vintage trailer; and more. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. Region-Free.

Kino Lorber's release of Death Ship is a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack. The 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray are both Region-Free.
Please note that all screencaptures included with this article are taken from the 1080p presentation of the Theatrical Cut on the Blu-ray. We have not provided screencaptures sourced from the 4K Blu-ray.
Screencaptures #1-31 are taken from the 4K restoration of the Theatrical Cut on the Blu-ray.
Screencaptures #32-40 are taken from the 2K restoration of the Extended Cut on the Blu-ray.
In 2020, we reviewed this Region-B release of Death Ship, produced by British label Nucleus Films. It is the only other release of the film I have in my library, so I used it to do various comparisons.
Kino Lorber's combo pack presents a new 4K restoration of the Theatrical Cut of Death Ship, sourced from the original camera negative. In native 4K, the 4K restoration can be viewed with HDR. The Extended Cut is presented only in 1080p on the Blu-ray. I viewed the Theatrical Cut in native 4K and later spent time with its 1080p presentation on the Blu-ray. The Region-B Blu-ray release we have referenced above presented only a 2K restoration of the Extended Cut.
I would describe the overall quality of the 4K restoration as good. However, the Theatrical Cut and the Extended Cut from the Region-B Blu-ray release have noticeably different appearances. I like certain aspects of these presentations a lot, but I feel that their unique strengths are frequently invalidated by other, also unique, weaknesses. Because of this development, I had a very difficult time deciding which of the two presentations of the Theatrical Cut and Extended Cut might be preferable. For example, in native 4K, the Theatrical Cut has several sections where the outdoor and properly lit indoor footage looks wonderful. These areas are sharper and better balanced, in native 4K and 1080p, too. However, there are some unmissable discrepancies in the color grades of the two cuts, and most of the adjustments are overlapping upgrades and downgrades. In native 4K, several of the superior adjustments in the primaries, usually during outdoor footage, are countered by lost shadow detail elsewhere. In 1080p on the Extended Cut, different ranges of nuances are not as great as those seen in native 4K, but in darker areas, there is unquestionably better detail. Also, there are numerous quick shifts in the color temperature of various sequences that feel too random, and it is very difficult to declare which of these sequences may be better graded. I prefer how most of the darker footage looks on the Region-B Blu-ray release because usually more detail is retained. However, the adjustments in the daylight footage on the 4K presentation are preferable. Lastly, I found the HDR grade pretty inconsistent, helping expand the dynamic range of the visuals in many areas, but making weaknesses in darker areas even more pronounced.

There are two standard audio tracks on this release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.
I decided to revisit the film with the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. I only sampled the DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track in several areas. The audio effects are quite surprising because the film was apparently shot with a modest budget, and very little of it must have been spent on the soundtrack. Or, perhaps this is an incorrect assumption because the various spooky sounds and noises keep popping up in the right places at the right time. Clarity, sharpness, and depth are great. I suppose in a few areas, the balance could have been slightly better. However, I also believe that any perceived unevenness is intentional.

4K BLU-RAY DISC

Death Ship should have been directed by Jack Hill. The original concept Hill describes in an archival program included on this release, I think, would have produced a much more colorful film than the one Alvin Rakoff directed. As it is, Death Ship is just a very small film that essentially incorporates several genre cliches to tell an underdeveloped story. Hill would have made it wild and unpredictable, plus he would have worked with actors who shared his enthusiasm for the project. Small genre films can be very entertaining, but they have to be directed and acted by people who understand how to transform their limitations and weaknesses into their biggest strengths.
Kino Lorber's combo pack presents a new 4K restoration of the Theatrical Cut of Death Ship on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray. The Extended Cut, which was previously restored in 2K, is available only on the Blu-ray. While there are a few things that I like slightly better on the 4K restoration of the Theatrical Cut, I prefer the overall appearance and color grade of the 2K restoration of the Extended Cut. RECOMMENDED, but only to fans of the film.
