Overview

Death Note: Light Up the New World (2016)

Ohba Tsugumi and Obata Takeshi's popular manga Death Note, which inspired a series of blockbuster films in 2006, returns to cinemas in 2016 with the new live-action blockbuster Death Note Light up the NEW world! Set ten years later when multiple death notes and death note holders appear again, Light up the NEW world stars Higashide Masahiro (Creepy), Ikematsu Sosuke (Pale Moon) and Suda Masaki (Assassination Classroom) in a new story helmed by Sato Shinsuke, the director of the Gantz and Library Wars adaptations. Introducing new soul reapers and death note rules, the fantasy thriller brings more twists and turns, shocking revelations and stunning visuals into the Death Note universe. Toda Erika reprises her role as Amane Misa, Nakamura Shido returns to voice Ryuk the reaper, and Fujiwara Tatsuya's Kira continues to have a significant presence in the film as his successor emerges to challenge the world order. The original Death Note revolves around disaffected university student Light who discovers a soul reaper's notebook that allows him to kill individuals by writing their names within. Light uses the death note to execute ruthless justice under the moniker Kira, but he meets his match in quirky genius detective L. Ten years after the battle between Kira and L, six more death notes are dropped into the human world, claiming lives and wreaking havoc around the world. Japan's special death note task force, led by investigator Mishima (Higashide Masahiro), recovers one of the death notes after a mass murder incident in Tokyo. Meanwhile, a death note-wielding cyber terrorist (Suda Masaki) using Kira's name suddenly appears to challenge the police and incite public unrest. Mishima teams up with L's successor, detective Ryuzaki (Ikematsu Sosuke), to hunt down the new Kira and race to collect the six death notes first.
