Daybreakers 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Lionsgate Limited's releases for September are an unusually varied lot, at least in terms of packaging options and whether or not Lionsgate has already released the title in either 1080 or 4K. In the case of Daybreakers, this Lionsgate Limited 4K edition features SteelBook packaging with a lenticular O ring (see the hi res photos accompanying this review), as well as some new bonus features. This release, unlike Lionsgate's previous Daybreakers 4K wide release in standard packaging does not include a 1080 disc.

Daybreakers 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

• Building the World of Daybreakers (HD; 15:59) is new to this release and has some good interviews offering quite a bit of background production information.


• Art and Craft: The Actors of Daybreakers (HD; 12:05) is another newly released featurette, this one focusing on the marquee stars.


• Gag Reel (HD; 2:00) offers previously unseen bloopers, albeit weirdly anamorphically squeezed.


• Art Department Lighting and Tests (HD; 1:32) shows some fun behind the scenes preparations.


• Costume, Hair and Make-up Tests (HD; 9:05) follows suit for those departments.


• First Subsider Test (HD; 9:01) has some more fun test footage, but is also kind of weirdly anamorphically squeezed.


• Make-Up Effects Tape (HD; 8:32) has some cool (upscaled) looks at makeup being applied.


• Stunt Department (HD; 7:11) shows some of the stunt work being rehearsed along with interviews.


• On the Set of Daybreakers (HD; 44:34) should delight fans with a glut of behind the scenes footage.

The accompanying hi res photos offer looks at the nicely designed SteelBook, though it may be the gruesome back panel (shown in image 3) rather than the front that attracts the most attention. The lenticular O ring more or less repeats the front panel's imagery, albeit with a couple of "reveals" when you change your viewing angle. A digital copy is enclosed.

Daybreakers 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Consulting the previous reviews by both Dustin and myself should let readers know how we feel/felt about the film and its technical presentation, but Lionsgate Limited is to be commended for offering fans a glut of new supplements in addition to the previously released ones, as well as a nicely designed SteelBook with the added allure of a lenticular O ring. Those on disc and packaging extras probably make this the desired release even without a 1080 disc. With caveats from previous reviews noted and with regard to the overall package, Recommended.
