Ambitious model Diana Scott uses her relationships to turn a low-rent career into a high-gear smorgasbord of jet-setting, love-making and the pursuit of hedonistic happiness. But as she moves from one fiery tryst with a TV writer to another with a suave playboy and yet another with a crown prince, she finds that happiness is the one thing that may elude her forever.

John Schlesinger's "Darling" (1965) arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of StudioCanal. The supplemental features on the release include new program with screenwriter Frederic Raphael; archival program with John Schlesinger; new program with Sofia Coppola; trailers; and more. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. Region-B "locked".

Presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.66:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, Darling arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of StudioCanal.
Darling made its high-definition debut with this Blu-ray release, also produced by StudioCanal, in 2015. It is the only other release of Darling that I have in my library.
This upcoming Blu-ray release introduces a new 4K 16-bit restoration sourced from the best surviving elements. The 4K restoration is also made available on 4K Blu-ray in this combo pack. I viewed the entire 4K restoration in native 4K. However, later I spent plenty of time with its presentation on this Blu-ray release to see how big the improvements in quality are over the previous Blu-ray release, which I like quite a lot.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the new 4K restoration brings a healthier, more attractive presentation of the film. On the previous Blu-ray release, the entire film had a solid, attractive organic appearance as well, but some of its visuals had retained different small blemishes and nicks. I did not find them distracting. However, I thought that they could have been eliminated with digital tools. They are not on the new 4K restoration, and this is one of the biggest improvements on the new presentation of the film. In various areas, grain exposure and delineation are better, though I must immediately clarify that these improvements are not consistent. Why? The previous presentation already produced very good visuals, so in different areas the improvements in quality are either minimal or insignificant. Additionally, the original cinematography has plenty of native density fluctuations, some of which are present in footage that quite simply cannot look significantly better. The grayscale is excellent. Blacks, grays, and whites all look enormously healthy and nicely balanced. I did not encounter any traces of problematic digital corrections. In summary, this Blu-ray release will give you a superior presentation of the film. However, the majority of this superiority is revealed through the healthier and more attractive appearance of the film, not via a range of consistent significant improvements that strengthen delineation, clarity, and depth. (Note: This is a Region-B "locked" Blu-ray release. Therefore, you must have a native Region-B or Region-Free player in order to access its content).

There are two standard audio tracks on this release: English LPCM 2.0 and German LPCM 2.0. Optional English SDH and German subtitles are provided for the main feature.
I viewed the new 4K restoration of Darling in native 4K and later spent time with its 1080p presentation on the Blu-ray. The comments below are from our review of the 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack, reviewed here.
The lossless track is excellent. All exchanges are very clear, sharp, and easy to follow. I would describe stability is very good, too. However, there are a few areas -- one of them is the big party where 'truths' are revealed -- where some small dynamic unevenness can be noticed. This is an inherited limitation. While I think that modern digital tools can easily eliminate it, it is perfectly fine to have it reproduced by the lossless track. I did not encounter any distortions or audio dropouts to report.

John Schlesinger's Darling can be awfully cynical at times. However, this is precisely the reason why it feels so relevant today. Like its young and beautiful protagonist, many of us are brainwashed to relentlessly pursue success, but only a few truly understand what we are after and the price we would have to pay for it. This upcoming Blu-ray release introduces a wonderful new 4K restoration with a fine selection of bonus features, one of which is an exclusive new program with Frederic Raphael, who wrote the screenplay for Darling sixty years ago. If you decide to acquire it, I strongly recommend grabbing with it a copy of Antonio Pietrangeli's I Knew Her Well, a true masterpiece about another beautiful Italian model pursuing success in the Eternal City, which also celebrates its sixtieth anniversary this year. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
