Daisy May Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf April 23, 2024

1979’s “Daisy May” isn’t a force of dramatic urgency. Actually, it’s barely a movie, with director Fred J. Lincoln and writer Daniel Webster creating only a vaguely defined problem for the main characters to solve. The feature is more of an extended showcase for adult cinema highlights, with the cast put to work in various scenes of seduction, which take up most of the run time. There’s something of a tale in the mix, and one about the crazy power of a special juice and its influence over rural characters, but offering a study of beverage authority isn’t the goal here.

Colonel Fulgoose (Aaron Stuart) oversees operations at the “Pussy Patch,” his compound located somewhere in the south. Fulgoose has uncovered a special formula capable of driving anyone who drinks it into a sexual frenzy, including young Daisy May (Holly Joy), his unobtainable object of desire, who’s already committed to the pursuit of Lil Abraham (Blair Harris). Producing massive quantities of “Lickapoo Juice,” Fulgoose elects to celebrate his birthday by offering free samples of the cocktail, working with local Native America resident, Big Pole (David Morris), to distribute the drink. While Fulgoose is determined to wrap his hands around Daisy May, things get out of control at the compound, with all residents, including Kate (Hillary Summers) and Bimbo (Sue Nero), hellbent on seducing one another, creating a big mess for the colonel and his television empire.

“Daisy May” isn’t going for hospital corners when it comes to developing the plot, with only a basic sense of the “Lickapoo Juice” influence. There’s Fulgoose, who’s trying to use the drink to possess Daisy May, and there’s everyone else, who chug the beverage, ready to get crazy with one another. This includes Mamy Lickum (Lisa K. Loring), but Lincoln primarily focuses on Kate and Bimbo, clearly more interested in putting them in various sexual scenarios, including a hot tub event. “Daisy May” is all about carnal action, but there are peculiarities along the way, including a main title theme that celebrates the trials of stepping in cow dung, and there’s some power plays to examine, with Daisy May lusting after Lil Abraham, trying to catch his attention, while Fulgoose is desperate to acquire the younger woman for himself. It’s all part of the “code of the hills.”

The AVC encoded image (1.84:1 aspect ratio) presentation for "Daisy May" is "newly restored" from its 35mm original camera negative. This feature is all about studying bodies in motion, and skin particulars are strong here, offering a clear look at the actors as they crawl all over one another. Costuming is also textured, with rougher denim and softer lingerie. Interiors are open for inspection as the action visits various rooms of the house. Exteriors are also dimensional with this rural setting. Colors are secure, with appealing greenery. Primaries are nicely boosted with style selections and interior design choices. Skin tones are natural. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is fine and film-like. A few scratches are found, but the source remains in good condition.

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA mix is a straightforward understanding of "Daisy May" and its thespian achievements. Dialogue exchanges are clear, securing accent work and performance choices. Scoring is simple and supportive, and the theme song retains defined vocals.

Daisy May Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Of course, there are questions after watching "Daisy May," but, again, tracking a story doesn't seem to be the point of the picture, which only pays occasional attention to character progression. Fulgoose is revealed to be some type of television baron at the end of the feature, which is surprising to learn, with the details of this job probably strong enough to support its own movie. Lincoln isn't paying too close attention to anything here besides couplings, and there's plenty of that in "Daisy May," which is perfectly happy walking away from personalities to deliver the goods to adult cinema fans and their limited patience with more dramatic endeavors. The Lickapoo Juice must flow!
