The career of director Arthur Bressan Jr. offers an unusual ride of dramatic intensity, going from documentaries (“Gay U.S.A.”) to narrative-driven features detailing troubling subject matters (“Abuse,” “Buddies”). Somewhere in the mix, there was time for more sexual adventures, including 1984’s “Daddy Dearest” and “Juice,” which explore an adult entertainment side to the helmer as he takes on two tales of fantasy, and, in many ways, the demands of daily employment. Bressan Jr. provides some intensity as the main characters deal with their wandering minds, but the pictures are primarily out to showcase bedroom encounters and lustful ways, putting on a display for viewers while Bressan Jr. works around the thinnest of plots to hold “Juice” and “Daddy Dearest” together.

In “Juice,” Jim (Michael Christopher) is a photographer for Juice Magazine struggling to find exciting models for his work. His publisher, Jack, is growing tired of the same old faces and bodies, pushing his employee to locate new inspiration or he might lose his job. Jim hits the streets in search of Eric (Vincent Thomas), a jogger who beguiles him, hoping to contact the elusive young man. During this mission, Jim interacts with hustlers and friends, keeping pictures and sexual experiences coming as he tries to nail down a return to Eric and his enticing ways.

In “Daddy Dearest,” Ed (Daniel Holt) is a film director about to start production on his latest project. However, he remains distracted by memories of his ex-lover, Bob, often getting lost in fantasies. Jack, Ed’s producer, looks to keep the helmer on task, overseeing the casting of two young men hired to portray college students on the hunt for an older “daddy” type to keep them excited. As the shoot commences, Ed struggles to stay concentrated, often seeing himself involved in sexual situations.

Bressan Jr. isn’t exactly Brian De Palma, but he shares a similar fascination with the ways of obsession. It’s the stuff that drives both “Juice” and “Daddy Dearest,” with the latter following Ed’s fixation on the loss of his lover, finding thoughts of the man that got away filling his mind, leaving him somewhat powerless to his own sex drive. He’s a filmmaker, a job that requires tremendous focus, but “Daddy Dearest” mostly remains in Ed’s clouded head as he takes any opportunity to lose himself in the moment, feeling reheated around casting choices, which only take him deeper into a dreamlike state. “Juice” finds Jim unable to shake his interaction with an NYC jogger, working to reconnect with the man, who remains elusive, adding fuel to the fire of the photographer’s desire as he tries to master a fresh shoot for his magazine.

“Juice” and “Daddy Dearest” aren’t powerful dramatic displays, as Bressan Jr. only has minor interest in creating stories for the productions. There’s some pressure applied by outside forces, putting the main characters in both endeavors on the hunt for professionalism, and they’re both monitored by others, as a producer and publisher seek to keep Ed and Jim on the move as they embark on creative challenges. There’s no commentary on the demands of these industries, but a drive to complete work provides as much narrative hustle as Bressan Jr. is willing to give. The rest of “Juice” and “Daddy Dearest” attempts to retain as much physical intimacy as possible, delving into masturbation sessions and couplings, both real and imagined. The helmer is out to celebrate maleness in many ways, devoting most of the run times to such exploration and concentration. It’s a mission to generate a certain level of heat, and your mileage may vary when it comes to such intensity. However, Bressan Jr. is making some attempt to add a psychological element to the features, allowing them to rise above the usual in X-rated adventuring.

Both "Juice" and "Daddy Dearest" offer AVC encoded image (1.35:1 aspect ratio) presentations, listed as "newly restored in 2K from their original film elements." The features basically look the same, down to cinematographic style and locations. Damage is present throughout the viewing experiences, including jumpy frames, deep scratches, and judder. However, move beyond a display of age, and the features offer decent detail, exploring ample skin particulars on the cast. Living spaces are dimensional, highlighting decorative additions, and exteriors are deep, doing especially well on "Juice," which spends more time on New York City locations, including marquee exploration. Color is acceptable, capturing the cooler concrete ways of urban areas and warmer human moments. Skin tones are natural. Brighter primaries are found on signage and period style. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is decently resolved.

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA mixes remain in line with the low-budget features. Some age is noticeable, along with mild volume inconsistencies. Intelligibility isn't threatened. Scoring is also appreciable, leading with a simple synth sound.

"Juice" is definitely the livelier picture of the two, commencing with a jaunty theme song and a professional mission for Jim that puts him into contact with some unusual people, including a food delivery guy who steals his underwear. There are trips to porn theaters and photo sessions, generating a more active viewing experience. "Daddy Dearest" isn't quite as motivated, including an entire sequence devoted to two guys smoking a joint. The feature seems closer to Bressan Jr.'s filmmaking experiences, making it the more personal of the pair, which helps to get through a somewhat plodding pace. Both endeavors retain some artistic appeal, and the helmer is certainly capable of filling the movies with plenty of erotic material to engage the target demographic.
