Crazy Rich Asians 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard December 14, 2023

Crazy Rich Asians is a romantic comedy that dazzled audiences with plenty of fun performances by the ensemble cast. Based on the novel “Crazy Rich Asians” by Kevin Kwan. Crazy Rich Asians is a charming film with a lot of warmth.

Executive produced by Tim Coddington (Mulan – Live Action, Cowboy Bebop – Live Action), Robert Friedland (Final Cut, The Wailing), Sidney Kimmel (Moneyball, Final Cut), and Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians did great at the box-office - earning 239 million on a $30 million budget. Two sequels are now in development. Starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, and Lisa Lu.

Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) travels from New York (where she teaches economics as a professor at New York University) to the beautiful land of Singapore. The trip is a chance for Rachel to finally meet the family of her boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding). When Rachel becomes reacquainted with her college roommate Peik Lin Goh (Awkwafina) some new adventures await.

Rachel soon discovers that Nick’s family is wealthier than she ever imagined in the first place. Rachel is introduced to Nick’s mother, Eleanor Young (Michelle Yeoh) as well as Nick’s cousin Astrid Young Teo (Gemma Chan). Fun and games await the couple but one thing is for sure – family can sometimes cause even more (mis)adventures than the journey to finding true love. Can Rachel and Nick survive the epic journey and tie the knot?

Contance Wu is an enormously gifted actress. The star of Fresh Off the Boat, Wu is an undeniable charmer and she does a great job in the lead role. Wu was perfect casting and she carries the film with her magnetic personality. Henry Golding also does a solid job opposite Wu as Rachel’s boyfriend and he adds a lot to the film too. Michelle Yeoh is also entertaining and charming as Eleanor Young and she was a great addition to the cast. Stealing the show, Awkwafina is arguably the best part of the film - Peik Lin Goh being brought to life by Awkwafina with all the comedic chops necessary for the role. Awkwafina certainly is a scene-stealer and she makes the film a lot more entertaining on the whole.

The production is lavish and impressive. The production design by Nelson Coates (Fifty Shades Freed, The Proposal) adds to the experience. The film has an enormous sense of scale and this carries the production forward with an ambitious and elegant scale that is far greater than the budget on the production. The art direction by Leslie Ewe (Westworld, Outlander) reflects the quality production elements, too. The entire effort is praiseworthy.

The costumes by Mary E. Vogt (Hocus Pocus, Batman Returns) are a lot of fun and add a lot of warmth to the entire film. The costumes look great and are a wonderful showcase. The costumes certainly are great at showcasing the actors in their respective roles. Vogt did great work with Crazy Rich Asians.

The score composed by Brian Tyler (Fast X, Scream VI) is a fun and engaging part of the film. The music is energetic and the big energy helps the filmmaking build. The music is a nice backdrop for the romantic elements, too.

Edited by Myron Kerstein (In the Heights, Garden State), Crazy Rich Asians is well-paced and the sense of scale is highlighted well with the quality editing. The film has a nice flow and rhythm. Kerstein worked well with the material.

The cinematography by Vanja Cernjul (House of the Dragon, The Deuce) is a highlight of Crazy Rich Asians. The visual style of Crazy Rich Asians is something that enhances the beauty of the film. An entertaining visual experience and one that is more rewarding because of the work of Cernjul.

The screenplay by Peter Chiarelli (Now You See Me 2, The Proposal) and Adele Lim (Raya and the Last Dragon, Joy Ride) does a solid job adapting the source book. The script is charming and the cast of characters make the film that much more special. Crazy Rich Asians is a story about family and it explores a journey of love. The script is fun and the screenwriters enjoy exploring this arena.

Directed by Jon M. Chu (In the Heights, Step Up 3D), Crazy Rich Asians is better than one might expect, with the film surpassing many romantic comedies to be something a bit more special. The cast deliver and director Chu did a good job working with the ensemble. Crazy Rich Asians exudes charm and it became a huge hit for this reason. Crazy Rich Asians is well worth celebrating.

Crazy Rich Asians 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  5.0 of 5

Released on 4K UHD by Warner Bros., Crazy Rich Asians is presented in 2160p HEVC / H.265 in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.40:1 widescreen. The negative format was a Codex V-Raw. As a result, the release provides a native 4K presentation of the feature-film and the release is not simply upscaled from a 2K DI. The release provides a HDR10 high-dynamic range presentation and does not include a Dolby Vision metadata HDR grade. The 4K presentation looks outstanding with great color, detail, and depth. The HDR grade was especially noteworthy and made the visuals look all the more rewarding. This is an excellent 4K UHD release. Fans who already own the film on Blu-ray and are considering an upgrade to 4K will find this release to be a worthwhile purchase.

Crazy Rich Asians 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

The release is presented in English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. The lossless audio quality on the release is outstanding. The lossless sound mix was one with outstanding clarity. The resolution added to the experience with crystal clear sound and the surrounds are active and engaging with an impressive sense of creativity to the soundstage. A fun lossless audio mix and one well encoded by Warner Bros.
