Come with Me My Love Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf November 21, 2022

Director Doris Wishman is perhaps best known for her softcore entertainment, making deep-dive cult endeavors such as “Double Agent 73” and “Deadly Weapons.” For 1976’s “Come to Me My Love,” Wishman goes hardcore, overseeing the creation of a ghost story with a defined dark side, attempting to make erotica out of a grim idea. As with most Wishman efforts, production hospital corners aren’t welcome, with the moviemaker basically assembling a tale of horror and sex out of anything she can find, creating a disjointed but oddly determined downer of a film.

Abby (Ursula Austin) has just moved into her new apartment, which was the site of a murder-suicide decades ago, with Randolph (Jeffrey Hurst) killing his wife and himself after discovering her affair. Abby is ready to enjoy the city and its men, but Randolph is a persistent ghost, presenting sleeping pills to help seduce her, carrying on a sexual relationship that’s tested when she finds other lovers during the day.

“Come with Me My Love” is traditional Wishman weirdness, with the saga of Abby only presented in vague terms, as she leaves behind a roommate (Vanessa Del Rio) for the single life. She’s ready to mingle, but Randolph maintains a presence in the apartment, pushing the young woman to take pills so he can have sex with her. The concept is a little uncomfortable, but Wishman brings some no-budget goofiness to the movie, selling the idea of a ghostly lover with mirror tricks, and if that isn’t entertaining, bedroom antics with Abby’s neighbor (Annie Sprinkle) are presented to mix things up.

The AVC encoded image (1.37:1 aspect ratio) presentation is sourced from a 2K scan of the original 35mm negatives and "vault elements." "Come with Me My Love" isn't an advanced production, offering the basics in visual design, which handle with excellent detail, capturing various bodily surfaces and fluids, along with fine hair. Interiors retain as much decoration as the filmmaker allows, and costuming is fibrous. Color delivers vivid skin tones and primaries on clothing. Decorative elements are also distinct, with period hues. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is fine and film-like. Source has moments of damage, including jumpy frames, scratches, and yellow spotting.

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA mix offers a basic listening event, with dubbed performances intelligible. Scoring is simplistic but supports with minimal age and damage. Sound effects with ghostly happenings are appreciable.

Wishman has her distractions (Abby visits Central Park and is attacked by a man with snowballs), and her limited interest in technical achievements remains undisturbed. Randolph's rampage is good from some oddity, killing Abby's lovers, and there's a bleak ending for "Come with Me My Love," which is unusual for an adult picture. Little elements contribute to unintentional entertainment value here, with Wishman hoping to sell some kind of grand romance, only to end up with a bizarre take on sexual obsession largely contained to one apartment space.
