Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army is an adventure comedy series. Based on the Japanese light novel series created and written by Rokujūyon Okazawa, Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army was also adapted into a manga version following the publication of the light novel series. The manga series was by Rurekuchie with original designs created by sage joh.
The series first broadcast in Japan on the Tokyo MX network. The series premiered on January 7th, 2023 and aired through March 25th, 2023. Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army features animation production by Bibury Animation Studio (Black Rock Shooter: Dawn Fall, Grisaia: Phantom Trigger) and Encourage Films (Merc Storia: The Apathetic Boy and the Girl in a Bottle, Deaimon: Recipe for Happiness).
Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army features theme music performed by Hinano (opening) and Akari Kitō (ending). Produced by Hiroaki Nakazato (Pan de Peace!, Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It. r=1-sinθ), Takanori Matsuoka (Dragon Goes House-Hunting, Show By Rock!!), and Yoshiyuki Shiotani (Death March to The Parallel World Rhapsody, How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord), Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army features voice-performances by Tomokazu Sugita and Akane Fujita. Fans of action-adventure comedies may wish to check out the series.
Dariel (Tomokazu Sugita) finds his life turned upside down when he goes from being a respected solider with the Demon King’s Army to losing his job after the Captain decides to fire him and change things up. Dariel is now unsure what to do with himself. What new chapter might await Dariel? Perhaps one of ‘chillin’ after being fired.
At least, Dariel is now seeing a future with a lot more time on his hands – time to relax and do nothing without his job. However, Dariel soon meets the gorgeous Marika (Akane Fujita) and saves her from an attack. The complete stranger is now alongside him and the two find themselves together in her village. What future awaits the pair? Dariel soon finds himself helping others in Marika’s village – and must keep his past job as a solider a secret now.

Dariel and Marika make for decent lead characters for the series. Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army excels a bit by exploring the dynamics between these characters on the series. Dariel is certainly in over his head after being fired and at a total loss and this element plays a significant role with the character, too. The character designs are well done and are brought to life by Satomi Yonezawa. The designs certainly fit the central protagonists nicely and add to the aesthetics of Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army.
Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army features solid animation. The animation might not break new ground but it does offer a decent aesthetic for anime fans. The animation features art direction by Kazuhiro Arai (All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, Lupin III: Dead or Alive) alongside chief animation direction by Ayumi Sōgawa (Magical Girl Site, The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent), Fumiaki Satō (The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent, A Centaur's Life), Sakae Shibuya (Magical Girl Site, Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions), and Satomi Yonezawa (The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent). The animators did a good job with the production. Although Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army isn’t top-tier animation, the art looks solid and the animators deliver a decent animated adventure with solid background art.
The score composed by Tsubasa Ito (The Price of Smiles, Skeleton Knight in Another World) adds to the series style. The score is a decent backdrop for the adventure setting. Though not a brilliant score, a decent one that works well enough for the series genre. The score works well enough within the framework of the series.
The cinematography by Yasuyuki Itou (Action Heroine Cheer Fruits, The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess) is decent and adds to the production aesthetic of Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army, too. The cinematography on Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army certainly helps to highlight the series animation and bring some extra visual flourishes to the production, too.
Written by Hitomi Amamiya (The Strongest Tank's Labyrinth Raids, Merc Storia: The Apathetic Boy and the Girl in a Bottle), Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army isn’t quite a slam dunk but it does have some solid enough dialogue for the characters. The comedy element is uneven at times and some jokes might work better for some audiences over everyone. Even so, a decent-enough effort by Amamiya.
Directed by Fumitoshi Oizaki (Deaimon: Recipe for Happiness, Merc Storia: The Apathetic Boy and the Girl in a Bottle), Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army is an energetic if uneven action- adventure comedy. Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army isn’t perfect but it does have solid direction and genre fans with low expectations may still enjoy some of what the series has to offer. Keep expectations in check but it may be worth a look.

Released on Blu-ray by Crunchyroll, Chillin' in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King's Army is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The animation looks crisp and beautiful on the release. Animation is remarkably detailed and well preserved by the encoding. The colorful aesthetic means that the animation and colors "pop" on the release.
Blu-ray continues to be the best option available for videophiles and home theater enthusiasts seeking the absolute best picture-quality obtainable. Streaming video platforms provide comparatively lower video quality with a more compressed image by comparison to physical media and the Blu-ray disc format. Sometimes the differences might seem small and sometimes more significant – but regardless the picture-quality tends to be superior on physical media. Physical media provides higher bit-rates and more refined encoding. For enthusiasts seeking the best option, Blu-ray is the clear choice.

The release is presented in Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 (with English subtitles). The release does not come with an English dubbed option on the release. The only audio option is the original Japanese language version. The sound direction by Hiroto Morishita (AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across the Blue, Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear) is well preserved on the release, too. It is surprising that the box-set doesn't include an English dub. Sentai Filmworks quite often releases anime without an English dub option but Crunchyroll (formerly Funimation Entertainment) almost always makes sure to produce a new English dubbed option for the release. Unfortunately, English dub fans will have to accept that the release is only provided with the original Japanese language version. However, audio purists and Japanese language audio enthusiasts who want the most authentic experience will be quite pleased and satisfied with what the release has to offer – quality lossless audio encoding for the original language version. Dialogue is clear and easy to understand on the release. The score is well reproduced on the set and soundstaging is impressive, too.
The Blu-ray release provides an obvious advantage over streaming video services. Streaming video services only provide lossy (non-lossless) audio quality. For audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts wanting the best possible audio quality obtained, the Blu-ray disc format offers a clear advantage with superior audio encoding and bit-depth. The bit-rates and bit-depth differences make a difference and add to a better experience.

The Blu-ray release includes a nice o-card slipcover on the first print run. The slipcover features unique key artwork that is different and distinct compared to the artwork highlighted underneath the slipcover artwork. The under-sleeve artwork is also unique and the contrast of the different artwork selections adds to the collectability of the set and the quality of the packaging design. The set looks nice in hand and will look great on a shelf.
On disc extras include:
Promo Videos (HD, 3:33)
Textless Opening Song (HD, 1:32)
Textless Closing Song (HD, 1:32)
The one significant area of the release that could have been improved was the supplementals. The bonus features are certainly sparse on the release. The extras could have been improved with the inclusion of audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes featurettes, making-of documentaries, photo galleries, and other more in-depth supplements – the kind of extras that add real value to the set and package for fans seeking more information about the series creation and development. Alas, the set only provides some fairly standard and straightforward inclusions – nothing out of the ordinary or special about the supplements provided.

Chillin' in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King's Army is a decent-enough adventure-comedy series. Though the series isn't perfect and it certainly isn't a classic, fans of silly adventure-comedies might find something to enjoy. Chillin' in My 30s After Getting Fired from the Demon King's Army is decent-enough entertainment for the right audience.
The Blu-ray release provides a solid high-definition presentation and lossless audio encoding. The set has a lackluster supplemental package, though. Bonus features fans will feel underwhelmed by the extras and consider it average-at-best – adding no real value to the set. The release does include a quality o-card slipcover on the first print run.
