Child's Play 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman August 17, 2022

Shout! Factory and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for the cult favorite 1988 Horror film 'Child's Play.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Child's Play 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  5.0 of 5

Shout! Factory's SteelBook is dark front and rear and will attract visible handling fingerprints. The front panel features the apartment building exterior, showing the scene where Karen's friend falls out the window. She is tumbling down bottom right. There are some nifty reflective elements around the building's perimeter, and some reflective lightning is striking the building. The top and left are predominantly dark, broken up by Chucky's right eye top left and the film's title bottom left in white with blood splattered across the word "Play" and the "s" in "Child's." The title is accompanied by the text, "You'll wish it was only make-believe." The rear panel is a black-and-white image depicting Chucky and Andy's faces, center. Various logos and a paragraph's worth of legalese appear across the bottom quarter. The spine is black with the film's title, as it is seen on the front, center. Various text and logos appear above and below.

Inside, the three discs, one UHD and two Blu-ray, are situated as follows: one disc on the left on its own hub and two on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a red-tinted still depicting Karen holding Chucky, left, and Andy on the right. All are in his bedroom.

Child's Play 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

The SteelBook is very dark and subdued and foreboding, perhaps going against expectation for a more colorful presentation. It looks good. The UHD presentation is also very good. Recommended.
