Perusing the Darren Aronofsky filmography, beginning with his debut 1998 feature Pi, reveals a series of high-concept standouts like Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain. His career then turned towards character study films like The Wreslter and The Whale. Now, here is Caught Stealing, a more mainline feature about a man caught in the middle of a violent pursuit in the gritty streets of late 1990s New York. The film certainly has some character study underpinnings, but this is really a kinetic and externally-focused Action film at its heart, away from the usual sort of lower paced and internally focused pictures that have come define his work.

Sony's 1080p Blu-ray presentation of Caught Stealing delivers a healthy image all around. There's a certain grimness to the film that captures its tone and intensity quite nicely. The picture is sharp and filmic, bringing to life all of the details on faces, skin, clothes, and various city environments with all of the definition and tangible intricacy one can reasonably expect from this resolution. 1080p Blu-ray may be an aging format, but it certainly in no way disappoints or presents anything to an unsatisfactory level. I find it hard to imagine anyone watching on this format to walk away disappointed with the level of sharpness and detail on display here. Colors are rich and full, delivering high yield output and plenty of intensity and pop, as necessary, but also working in low light with equal excellence. Bright blood, for example, leaps off the screen. White balance is very good, black level depth is a strength, and skin tones look spot-on. I didn't see any egregious source or encode issues, either.

Sony sends Caught Stealing home with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack. It's a good sturdy listen, delivering plenty of activity in all elements, including frenzied action and bar scene music and ambience with all of the surround engagement and overall gusto one would expect of a newly minted Action movie soundtrack. The feel for balance is terrific, and there is never a dull moment. Music engages with wide front spacing and faultless clarity. Ambient element are rich and well placed, seamlessly bringing the listener into the busy city locales and into the midst of the hard-hitting action scenes. Music is full and accompanied by just the right amount of powerful bass. Dialogue is clear and centered for the duration.

This Blu-ray release of Caught Stealing includes a few featurettes. No DVD copy is included, but Sony does bundle in a digital copy voucher.
The Blu-ray appears not to ship with a slipcover, unlike the companion UHD.

Caught Stealing is certainly a departure for Aronofsky, but a welcome one. To be sure, the more subtle and sublime experiences will always be his calling card, but he proves here that he's more than capable of helming a more kinetic and externally driven film. It's well done in all areas: its high speed, its high intensity, and its acting. It's certainly well put together by a veteran filmmaker stretching himself by stretching into the mainstream. Sony's Blu-ray delivers high quality video and audio presentations, paired with a handful of featurettes. Genre fans will love it.
