In early 1970s Las Vegas, low-level mobster Sam “Ace” Rothstein gets tapped by his bosses to head the Tangiers Casino. At first, he’s a great success in the job, but over the years, problems with his loose-cannon enforcer Nicky Santoro, his ex-hustler wife Ginger, her con artist ex Lester Diamond, and a handful of corrupt politicians put Sam in ever-increasing danger.

Universal brings one of Martin Scorsese's best back to 4K UHD disc with the 'Casino: 30th Anniversary Limited Edition SteelBook 4K'. The modern classic stars Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, and Sharon Stone in this fact-based tale of greed, corruption, and passion. The discs included in this release are identical to those found in the previous 4K release. The 4K disc features a pleasing 2160p transfer and an impressive DTS:X Master Audio track. All of the legacy features from the original 2008 release are again brought forward to this new release. A Digital Code redeemable via Movies Anywhere is also included. Please scroll down to the 'Special Features and Extras' section below for a discussion of the new SteelBook.

Instead of the offering a "traditional" cover for this release where the main trio of actors are moodily surrounded by darkness, this new SteelBook opts
for a more colorful approach. Here, DeNiro, Pesci, and Stone are surrounded in a prismatic spray of color, their torsos positioned above a vintage Las
Vegas skyline. Above the three leads is the film's title in a muted gold, and their names appear above that. The spine is a black field with the film's title,
again in muted gold, appearing in the center. Universal's logo sits at the bottom. The reverse shows gambling action on the floor of the Tangiers. The
same prismatic effect is applied and offers a more colorful contrast to the warm amber lighting of the gambling area. Universal's logo and statement of
copyright are found in the lower left corner, while a product number resides in the lower right. Opening the SteelBook, the Digital Code is found under
the tabs on the left side. On the right side, the 4K UHD disc and the Blu-ray disc, each containing the feature film and some mix of bonus material, are
stagger-stacked, each on its own hub, with the 4K UHD disc on top. Removing the discs and the code reveals a two-panel image that is the same as
that of the previous SteelBook from 2019, just zoomed out a bit and, this time, presented in color. It's an image of a determined, confident, and slightly
circumspect DeNiro watching over the floor of the Tangiers. Darker than the cover, black space dominates the image, but the amber lighting of the
casino floor adds a touch of brilliance. The same prismatic effect is used here as well, but to a much lesser degree. The SteeBook has been given a
glossy finish that enhances the the sprays of color, and adds a rich and dramatic punch to the metallic gold found in the title and several highlights.
There aren't any embossed or debossed elements.
As the discs are identical to those of the previous 4K release (whose Blu-ray is identical to that of the 2008 release), to read about the on-disc
supplements, please follow this link. Please note, as
per the previous 4K UHD release, only the "Moments" feature is found on the 4K disc.

Certainly a departure from the packaging images of previous releases, this new SteelBook provides a more vibrant and glamourous cover image and overall color scheme. Some, I'm sure will prefer the more serious and dramatic artwork of releases past, but I find it a welcome change of pace. The bigger issue at hand is that the contents of the SteelBook are not new. Those who have the previous 4K SteelBook from 2019 will find little reason to make a purchase here in unless they are enamored with the art, or are dedicated SteelBook collectors. But, those who missed out on that SteelBook, which now commands a hefty price on the secondary market, or who have yet to upgrade this essential film to 4K, should find this release quite tempting, indeed. The Casino: 30th Anniversary Limited Edition SteelBook 4K comes highly recommended.
