Boy overboard!

The original poster for Victor Fleming's Captains Courageous proudly proclaims it to be "As great as Mutiny on the Bounty", and it's hard to argue with that. I'd even say it might be a little better. This rousing coming-of-age adventure film, which was rightly nominated for four Oscars that year, still impresses as a crowd-pleaser that the whole family can enjoy. The durable origins of its "pocket epic" story are of course from Rudyard Kipling's 1897 novel, which was been adapted -- tightly or extremely loosely -- into everything from TV movies to musical theater and even the underrated 1994 comedy Cabin Boy, which I've never actively linked to in a review before. Better late than never, right?

It turns out that "better late than never" also applies to the main character of Captains Courageous, young Harvey Cheyne (Freddie Bartholomew), the spoiled son of a wealthy executive (Melvyn Douglas). Even at the ripe old age of 12, Harvey -- who doesn't respect anyone and is used to getting everything he wants -- is long overdue for a reality check, and he soon gets it when an accident changes the course of his life: during an ocean voyage with his dad, the boy accidentally falls overboard and is presumed lost at sea. Luckily he's later rescued by the crew of a fishing schooner and its captain, the stern but fair Captain Disko Troop (Lionel Barrymore, who didn't live to see the musical genre his character named), but he can't return his vessel to port for fear of sacrificing the fishing season.

The boy demands to be returned anyway... but instead, Captain Troop insists that Harvey pay his dues by working as one of the crew, which obviously doesn't start off so well. Luckily he's guided by Manuel Fidello (Spencer Tracy, in an Oscar-winning performance), a warm-hearted Portuguese fisherman whose patience, wisdom, and compassion all help Harvey to gradually shed his former skin as he learns practical skills, respect for difficult work, and the importance of honesty and kindness. Other influences include Captain Disko's energetic son Dan (Mickey Rooney, already a seasoned veteran at 17) and the sailor Long Jack (John Carradine). As Harvey baits hooks, hauls nets, and otherwise contributes to the demanding work of the fishing voyage, he gains confidence and earns the respect of the men who first viewed him as little more than a pampered child. More importantly, he develops a deep emotional bond with Manuel, who becomes the male role model Harvey never truly had despite his father's wealth and affection.

But as you might expect, theirs isn't an easy journey and with it comes occasional turbulence and even considerable tragedy, all of which likewise help Harvey to grow and become a better person than the petulant child that was pulled aboard. Bold, effective, and uncompromising, Captains Courageous offers separate potent reminders to parents and children: life lessons are sometimes only learned when taught by other people, and hardship often builds character... but don't go throwing your kids overboard. As its enduring legacy suggests, the novel and film's universal themes anchor most of its emotional depth, but the top-to-bottom solid performances, memorable original score, great cinematography, and excellent pace all keep Captains Courageous on course from start to finish.

Warner Archive's Blu-ray presentation of Captains Courageous, like most in the MGM library, is taken from secondary elements but remains a fine example of catalog restoration done right. Simply put, it's a standout effort that belongs in your classic film library and easily replaces the film's last home video appearance via Warner Bros.' 2006 DVD.

Warner Archive's restoration of Captains Courageous comes from a recent 4K scan of "best preservation elements" which, in the case of this MGM picture, translates to a nitrate safety that was made as part of the studio's sweeping archival program in the 1960s. The film's original camera negative, like countless others, was lost in the tragic 1978 George Eastman House fire but, due to MGM's foresight, this perfectly watchable secondary source material makes for a very satisfying substitute. As seen in these direct-from-disc screenshots, this is a consistently great-looking picture that, stray moments of rear projection aside, manages to maintain the reasonably convincing illusion of being stuck onboard a fishing vessel in the open ocean. Fine detail and textures are uniformly good with occasional detours into (perhaps unavoidable) softness, while black levels look deep and rich without suffering from crush. Likewise, other compression-related issues are smoothly side-stepped by excellent encoding, as Captains Courageous runs at a high and supportive bit rate from start to finish on this 50GB disc. As usual, you can expect excellence from the restoration efforts of Warner Archive, who consistently provide some of the best-looking Blu-rays in the business.

The excellent visuals are matched well with Warner Archive's DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio track, a split two-channel presentation of the film's original mono mix for wider playback. As its subject matter suggests, Captains Courageous balances rousing adventure and occasional danger with no shortage tender and intimate moments, and it likewise stays the course with strong fidelity and an overall clean, unobtrusive presence that gets the job done. Of particular note is the excellent original score by Franz Waxman, which unsurprisingly matches many of the film's emotional moods beat-for-beat without feeling too "on the nose". Source-related damage is kept to an absolute minimum.

This one-disc release ships in a keepcase with vintage poster-themed cover artwork. A handful of various comedy shorts from the era are also included as pre-show entertainment.

• How To Start the Day (10:10) - Noted "B" movie maven Roy Rowland, who got his start helming these MGM shorts, directs Robert Benchley in this tongue-in-cheek guide about what to do after sleeping.

• Leo Is On the Air (12:23) - One of many such MGM radio promos from the era (long before TV spots), this vintage audio-only piece highlights a number of dramatic scenes from the finished film.

• Wayward Pups (8:28) - This Happy Harmonies cartoon, presented in glorious Technicolor, was directed by Rudolf Ising and technically produced before MGM's cartoon studio was even founded.

Captains Courageous Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

As the parent of a 16 year-old (Happy Birthday, Anna!), I learned years ago that some lessons are best taught by outside influences. She didn't need to get lost at sea to learn personal responsibility, as young Harvey Cheyne did in Victor Fleming's Captains Courageous, but that journey didn't happen completely at home. Regardless, the themes of this enduring coming-of-age classic remain universal almost 90 years later -- or almost 120 years later, if we're talking about Rudyard Kipling's novel --and make this an accessible film that still holds plenty of power. Warner Archive's Blu-ray supports it well with another top-tier A/V restoration for fans of all ages to enjoy. Highly Recommended.
