Captain Marvel 3D Blu-ray Movie Review

An incredible spectacle is further heightened with amazing 3D and IMAX sequences

Saving the universe is all in a days work for the newest addition to The Avengers: Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). Winning over both audiences and critics alike, Marvel Studios epic adaptation of the beloved Captain Marvel comic books became a blockbuster success (and the adaptation even had a cameo appearance by the little-known yet long lost video store Blockbuster). Pun is absolutely intended!

A firecracker hero with a badass attitude, Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel) flies into space with relative ease and fights alien baddies without ever blinking. She's a true hero who makes the world a better place. Larson proves once again why she won herself an Oscar and the filmmakers bring this imaginative science-fiction comic book film to life with style: amazing CGI, world-building, and excitement at every turn.

"Oh, crap. I didn't turn my rentals in on time. If only I remembered to rewind!"

Captain Marvel 3D Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

In a single word: wow. Now on with the review:

Captain Marvel astonishes in 3D and truly makes the filmmaking and spectacle even more rewarding. Watching the film in 3D is arguably the best way to even experience this film (and I say that as a firm fan of 4K as well). Unlike the Blu-ray included in this release or the separately available 4K UHD edition, Captain Marvel 3D retains the aspect ratio of the IMAX footage sequences so that the film presentation has an alternating aspect ratio going back-and-forth between 2.35:1 widescreen and the more open scope used for the IMAX scenes (which completely fills the screen).

There is something amazing about watching Brie Larson save the world in 3D. The presentation helps enhance the energy, excitement, and suspense. From the exciting action sequences to the quieter moments of the film, Captain Marvel looks consistently great on this 3D release. While the IMAX sequences are the true show-stopping scenes (which seem to have an extra "pop" to them that shines) the entire presentation is consistently worthwhile and it's hard to imagine any 3D fans not considering this as a go-to disc in their Marvel Cinematic Universe collections.

The colors are rich and enveloping on this release (especially for a 3D presentation). I did not experience issues with too much dimming on the video. Brightness levels on this release are effective and do not disappoint. The added depth greatly enhanced the overall experience. While this presentation isn't one with much pop-out gimmicky effects (which is something to be thankful for), the added dimension greatly enhances the fun and makes this a rewarding way to watch the film. Grab some friends, make some popcorn, and buckle up for a terrific experience.

Captain Marvel 3D Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Re-watching Captain Marvel in 3D reminded me of why I love the 3D format so much in the first place. The experience adds so much immersion into the story: it heightens the entire experience and brings you even closer to the story. The added depth and dimension on this release is superb and the great IMAX sequences are only available on the 3D presentation of the feature. These scenes are epic in scope and really make the film shine even more.

Without a doubt, Captain Marvel received a top notch 3D presentation that stands out as one of Marvel's best 3D Blu-ray presentations to date. The action, spectacle, and excitement is greatly enriched by this filmmaking tool. Prepare to be blown away and sit back for a kick-ass experience which delivers on all cylinders. Captain Marvel 3D is a must-see for 3D enthusiasts.
