Candy Goes to Hollywood Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Brian Orndorf February 26, 2016A boost a filmmaking confidence greets viewers in 1979’s “Candy Goes to Hollywood,” with writer/director Gail Palmer suddenly in command of a franchise, treating the follow-up with a palpable surge of excitement. The helmer goes after the movie and television industry for this go-around of sex and comedy, using satiric takes on icons and opportunists to help amplify Candy’s latest odyssey, taking the deceptively innocent, perpetually smiling blonde to Los Angeles in search of stardom.

Palmer doesn’t offer consistency to the sequel, but her vision for “Candy Goes to Hollywood” is pleasingly broad, opening with star Carol Connors and her interpretation of MGM’s Leo the Lion production logo, while Candy’s visitations with seductive types encounter television talk show host Johnny Farson (Gary Grime) and studio mogul Samuel Goldicker (Turk Lyon). In the feature’s more elaborate scenes, Candy finds herself on the set of “The Dong Show,” pulled into a taping before Chuck Bareass (Richard Pacheco) has his way with her (future punk star Wendy O. Williams appears as a contestant who, ahem, has a special gift that involves ping pong balls). “Candy Goes to Hollywood” is episodic, spending the most time with the newcomer’s agent, Johnny Dooropener (John Leslie), but it’s rarely far from an eventful encounter, taking some leading lady pressure off Connors as the movie itself becomes the star of the show.
Candy Goes to Hollywood Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality

For "Candy Goes to Hollywood," the AVC encoded image (1.78:1 aspect ratio) presentation works with a slightly rougher source than "Erotic Adventures of Candy," showcasing a few sustained points of damage. The viewing experience doesn't take a hit, retaining typical Vinegar Syndrome quality quickly, delivering crisp details on body parts and locations -- early scenes on Hollywood Boulevard are fun to pause and study. Colors are bold and bright, making costuming memorable while skintones are spot-on. Delineation is satisfactory, but seldom explored in full. Grain is filmic.
Candy Goes to Hollywood Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality

The 1.0 DTS-HD MA sound mix keeps it simple, with performances carrying the listening experience, finding comedy highlight easy to follow, with only a few surges in crispiness with more responsive acting. Music is acceptable, securing the mood, but instrumentation isn't profound. Hiss and pops are detected, but don't distract.

Candy Goes to Hollywood Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

As with "Erotic Adventures of Candy," "Candy Goes to Hollywood" climaxes with a hint of additional shenanigans to come, with the heroine invited to take on Washington. Of course, there's plenty already here to satisfy, with Palmer attentive to the sex scenes and high jinks, while concluding the effort with an orgy, trying to expand the scale of the sequel. "Candy Goes to Hollywood" doesn't share the same spark as its predecessor, but it's a different kind of fun, extending amorous escapades to industry fans interested in parody and pleasure.
