Some people suddenly find religion, but for 16 year old Kusanagi Godo, it’s that really old time religion that’s found him! As the result of defeating the God of War in mortal combat, Godo’s stuck with the unwanted position of Campione, or God Slayer, whose duty is to fight Herectical Gods whenever they try to muscle in on the local turf. Not only is this likely to make Godo roadkill on the Highway to Heaven, it’s also a job that comes with a lot of other problems. Like how to deal with the fact that his “enhanced status” is attracting a bevy of overly-worshippy female followers. After all, they’re just there to aid him in his demi-godly duties, right? So why is it that their leader, the demonically manipulative sword-mistress Erica Brandelli, seems to have such a devilish interest in encouraging some very unorthodox activities?

Did the Greeks have harems? To quote a famous rock song from days of yore, “Don’t know much about history”, but that ignorance may actually come in handy when watching Campione!, a sometimes amusing harem-ecchi enterprise that sees a young teenage boy kill a God then become superpowered himself (as if he weren’t before), destined to defending his unwanted title of “god killer”. He’s surrounded by a gaggle of nubile young girls and becomes more and more ensnared with a number of quasi-mythological characters, including versions of various Gods and Goddesses from different cultures.

Campione! is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Sentai Filmworks with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. This is a really interesting looking series that frequently utilizes a quasi-distressed look that sometimes covers the image in what almost resembles video noise. However, at other times, actual video noise spikes in darker scenes, sometimes fairly strongly. Some of the "normal" day to day activities are cast in a kind of desaturated look, but once various Gods and Goddesses show up or other transformations ensue, things get decidedly more vivid. Line detail is quite strong, though some parts of this presentation are on the soft side (see screenshot 3 for a good example).

Campione! features lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mixes in both English and Japanese. Fidelity is excellent on both of these tracks, becoming especially impressive in the many battle scenes, when good lower frequency effects blast through the soundtrack. Dialogue is very cleanly presented.

Campione! has a lot going for it, not the least of which is some really astoundingly well animated battle scenes. But too often the show tends to dally in cliché ridden fan service elements, and as the story trundles along, a tendency to introduce more and more mythological characters from too many cultures to easily keep track of. But for those who like action blended with harem elements, Campione! comes Recommended.
