A tale of three friends growing up together 'in the 'hood.' Half-brothers Doughboy and Ricky Baker are foils for each other's personality, presenting very different approaches to the tough lives they face. Ricky is the 'All-American' athlete, looking to win a football scholarship to USC and seeks salvation through sports, while 'Dough' succumbs to the violence, alcohol, and crime surrounding him in his environment, but maintains a strong sense of pride and code of honor. Between these two is their friend Tre, who is lucky to have a father, 'Furious' Styles, to teach him to have the strength of character to do what is right and to always take responsibility for his actions.

Criterion's 4K Blu-ray release of Boyz n the Hood is a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack. However, the Blu-ray has only a selection of supplemental features. To get Boyz n the Hood on Blu-ray, you must consider this three-disc set.
Please note that all screencaptures included with this article are taken from the Blu-ray included in the box set linked above. We have not provided downscaled screencaptures taken from the 4K Blu-ray.
The following text appears inside the booklet provided with this release:
"Undertaken by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, the 4K restoration of Boyz n the Hood was created from the 35mm original camera negative. The restoration of Boyz n the Hood was supervised and approved by director John Singleton. The original 2.0 surround soundtrack was remastered from the 35mm magnetic track. Please be sure to enable Dolby Pro Logic decoding on your receiver to properly play the 2.0 surround track.
Colorist: Sheri Eisenberg, Roundabout Entertainment, Burbank, CA.
Image restoration: Prasad Corporation, Burbank.
Additional restoration by Roundabout Entertainment.
Audio restoration: Sony Pictures Post Media Center."
In native 4K, the 4K restoration can be viewed with Dolby Vision and HDR grades. I chose to view it with Dolby Vision. I also viewed the 4K restoration, in its entirety, in 1080p on the Blu-ray included in the box set linked above.
The 4K restoration of Boyz n the Hood has been out for several years, on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray, courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. However, the original 4K Blu-ray release had the 4K restoration graded only with HDR. I performed several quick comparisons to see if the Dolby Vision grade changes anything in a meaningful way. I do not think it does because on my system, all visuals looked identical. I focused primarily on darker footage, featuring different ranges of nuances, and everywhere I switched between the HDR and Dolby Vision grades, I could not see any meaningful discrepancies. I could see some small yet meaningful discrepancies in color reproduction while comparing the native 4K and 1080p presentations of the 4K restoration. The expanded color gamut makes some of the daylight footage appear more vibrant. However, the 4K restoration is so well done that the strength of its visuals in native 4K and 1080p is equally impressive. In native 4K, there are quite a few areas where grain fluctuations are more pronounced, and I tend to prefer how the same areas look in 1980p. The darkest footage -- like the one seen in the final sequence -- looks very solid in native 4K, so you should not be concerned about appearing too dark or producing crushing.
*We have a separate review of the Blu-ray release of Boyz n the Hood, with additional comments about the quality of the 4K restoration, available
here.

There are two standard audio tracks on this Blu-ray release: English Dolby Atmos and English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.
I have the 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Boyz n the Hood, and while viewing the native 4K and 1080p presentations of it, I spent plenty of time with both tracks. I prefer the DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track. I like its balance better, and in several specific sequences, like the night party where Ice Cube pulls out his gun and later shots are fired, I prefer the L/R movement. The Dolby Atmos does expand some areas, but I feel that it does a bit too much, affecting the balance. I did not encounter any age-related or encoding anomalies to report in our review.

4K BLU-RAY DISC

American urban cinema begins with John Singleton's Boyz n the Hood. Since 1991, every other film about life in the inner city has either imitated it or shamelessly lifted something from it. However, this is an unavoidable development because Boyz n the Hood tells it all and in a way that makes it impossible not to see it as the ultimate blueprint for American urban cinema. Criterion's 4K Blu-ray release presents Sony Pictures Entertainment's outstanding 4K restoration of it, together with a great selection of bonus features, in this four-disc set. However, the 4K restoration is not offered on Blu-ray. If you need a Blu-ray copy of it, you must consider acquiring this three-disc set. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
