Bound 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Dr. Svet Atanasov September 30, 2026

"Bound" (1996) arrives on 4K Blu-ray courtesy of Imprint Films. The supplemental features on the release include archival audio commentary; multiple archival programs with cast and crew members; multiple featurettes on the making of the film; vintage promotional materials; and more. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. Region-Free.

The plumber

The text below was first used in our review of French label M6 Video's Blu-ray release of Bound in 2009.

A good friend of mine, who writes for a popular French magazine, once told me: "Bound is so sexy, if it were filmed fifty years ago, it would have become an instant noir classic.” Having just revisited the Wachowskis’ film on Blu-ray, I have to agree. Bound has not lost its sex appeal one bit.

The story it tells is simple. Corky (Gina Gershon, Prey for Rock & Roll) is a beautiful female ex-con who makes ends meet as a plumber. She is sent to an apartment building in downtown Chicago to do a job. In the building’s lobby, Corky meets Caesar (Joe Pantoliano, Bad Boys II), a local mobster, and Violet (Jennifer Tilly, Bride of Chucky), his girl. While riding the elevator together, Violet looks at Corky in a way most men look at women, and the three get off on the same floor. The apartment Corky is sent to work on is right next to Caesar and Violet’s place.

Soon after, Violet comes knocking on Corky’s door. She tells Corky she dropped her ring in the sink and, because Caesar has stepped out, she needs help. Corky already knows why Violet is there, but decides to play her game. She goes to her place and helps Violet get her ring. Then, she gets her.

A few hours later, Caesar comes back. He has no idea what the two women have been doing and, while preparing to pay for her help, asks Corky to stay a little longer and have a drink. At first, Corky protests, but then accepts the money and the drink.

When the two women meet again, Violet reveals that she is sick of living with Caesar and ready to start a new life. She also tells Corky that someone (Barry Kivel, Body and Soul) is about to bring Caesar a case with two million dollars, which he must give to Gino Marzzone (Richard C. Sarafian, Bugsy), a big mafia boss. It is a lot of money that can permanently reset one's life, or a couple's future. Is Corky interested in helping her steal the money and then running away with her?

Bound was the Wachowskis’ debut as film directors. It was released a year after they contributed to Richard Donner’s Assassins, a high-octane action thriller starring Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, and Julianne Moore. It received good reviews in North America, but it quickly disappeared from the market because its distributor didn’t treat it right. After Bound was released on DVD, it became something of a cult classic.

In Bound, the sex is explicit but delicious. Gershon and Tilly’s famous scene — fully intact on this release — remains among the best I have seen in contemporary American cinema. The lines the two women utter before they begin making love are fantastic.

The sexual fireworks are coupled with plenty of violence, and Pantoliano’s character is in the middle of it all. Similar to the sex, the violence is also wonderfully shot. Plenty of it is mixed with a good dose of humor, which keeps it fresh. For example, in the second half, a man is badly tortured in a long scene, but his misery is hilarious. I am convinced Quentin Tarantino studied this scene, as different versions of it have appeared in a couple of his films.

You would either love or hate Bound. It is that type of film. I like it because it tells a good story and has a lot of style. I also like how deliciously naughty it is. In the latest R-rated Hollywood films, the sex is never exciting. It is either boring or tasteless, or both. If you decide to see Bound, you may not like it, but I guarantee you won’t be bored.

Bound 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  5.0 of 5

Imprint Films' release of Bound is a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack. The 4K Blu-ray and the Blu-ray are both Region-Free.

Please note that all screencaptures included with this article are taken from the Blu-ray. We have not provided downscaled screencaptures taken from the 4K Blu-ray.

The combo pack brings to Australia the recent 4K restoration of Bound, supervised and approved by cinematographer Bill Pope. In America, the 4K restoration was introduced by Criterion with this combo pack and this Blu-ray in 2024. On this combo pack, in native 4K, the 4K restoration can be viewed with Dolby Vision and HDR grades. I chose to revisit it with Dolby Vision.

We have several reviews of different releases of Bound from other territories, and if you have read any of them, you already know that I am a superfan of this film. So, I have collected multiple releases of it, some also from the DVD era. The 4K restoration that was prepared for it is gorgeous and without a shadow of a doubt its definitive makeover. Before the 4K restoration, Bound was remastered by several companies, and while it looked fine -- certainly a lot better than it did on DVD -- these presentations are not as satisfying as this final makeover. Bound has a tremendously attractive organic appearance now, and whether viewed in native 4K or 1080p, its visuals impress with the same qualities. Delineation, clarity, sharpness, and depth are consistently outstanding. Also, the density levels of all visuals are fantastic. Color reproduction and balance are impeccable. In native 4K, the expanded color gamut of the visuals is slightly more impressive, but the strength of the 4K restoration is such that the 1080p visuals look pretty remarkable as well. (For what it's worth, one of the old DVD releases I have does not even offer an anamorphic presentation of Bound, so just a few decades ago, this film looked drastically different on home video). Image stability is great. The entire film looks implacably clean as well.

Bound 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

There are two standard audio tracks on this release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and English LPCM 2.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.

I revisited Bound with the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. It is a very solid track that handles the action footage and noise -- like the one around 1:10.02 -- very well. All dialogue is clear, stable, and easy to follow. I quickly sampled several different areas with the LPCM 2.0 track. I think that I prefer this track because I am somewhat used to it.

Bound 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  5.0 of 5

For a superfan of Bound like me, this lavish combo pack, produced to celebrate its 30th anniversary, is a rather surreal release. It brings to Australia its recent gorgeous 4K restoration and a terrific selection of bonus features that were previously included on several other releases. A few decades ago, no one even dreamed of such a definitive release. Fans and superfans of Bound simply hoped for a decent home video release featuring its unrated version, which was a pretty tall order. The love that the folks at Imprint Films have given smaller genre films like Bound — and earlier this year also The Last Seduction — has not gone unnoticed. Releases like this combo pack are truly special. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
