Bloodsport 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Put up your Dux (again).

Reviewed by Randy Miller III August 21, 2025

Available in three international markets and a variety of packaging variants (including the German Mediabook combo pack I reviewed in 2023), Capelight Pictures' 4K editions of Cannon Films' cult classic Bloodsport (which also include a remastered region-free Blu-ray) are perfectly well-rounded efforts that sadly have yet to reach a domestic distributor. No matter: several great options are still in-print and easily obtainable for import, such as this Steelbook combo pack released in Germany as well as the UK. Aside from occasional packaging and menu language variances, all the editions I've encountered thus far include the same solid A/V merits and a wealth of identical new extras. Unlike the oversized Mediabook linked above, this Steelbook's benefit is a smaller footprint and sleeker design elements.

R.I.P., your wallet.

For a synopsis and appreciation of the main feature, please head on over to Martin Liebman's review of the 2010 Blu-ray (in this case, a Van Damme double feature with Timecop released by Warner Bros.). Please note that my above-linked 4K Mediabook review also offers a brief tribute to the film's occasionally unintentional greatness.

Likewise, the above-linked review also offers details about the multiple audio options available here, which include newly remixed and original theatrical audio tracks in both German and English as well as subtitles to match.

Bloodsport 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

This release ships in Steelbook packaging, predominantly black with a stylized picture of Van Damme striking a pose below the blood-red logo and, like Capelight's recent 4K Steelbook edition of Over the Top, there's debossing inside the border as well as around the logo and Van Damme's body. The back cover sports a flat but similarly colored image, this time focusing on Bolo Yeung's "Chong Li" (big name, minor character), while the interior spread features a black-and-white panoramic vista of Hong Kong. Both discs sit on overlapping hubs on the right side and, unlike the Mediabook, there are no inserts of any kind. It's a basic but attractive design overall, and the Steelbook slides into a practical "pocket" J-card with descriptive movie and disc info on the back... all in German, of course. Scheiße!

On-disc bonus features mirror the German Mediabook combo pack and other international variants; they're all covered in more detail at the review link but are listed here for your convenience. As before, the menus are all in German but easily interpreted, while the extras themselves feature English dialogue with optional German subtitles.

Bloodsport 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Newt Arnold's Bloodsport, which was the perfect launching pad for future megastar Jean-Claude Van Damme, remains an influential and entertaining cult classic and has recently been remastered in 4K by Capelight Pictures. This German Steelbook combo pack, much like other international editions and variants, features a great 2160p/HDR10/Dolby Vision transfer, Atmos and theatrical audio tracks, lots of recent extras, and a remastered Blu-ray. English-friendly (with easily interpreted German menus) and region-free too, it's a low-risk import for fans. Highly Recommended.
