Black Panther 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Disney's hit Marvel movie 'Black Panther' released widely in both Blu-ray and UHD versions (and 3D overseas). The film received several store exclusive releases as well, including this Best Buy exclusive UHD SteelBook (also available in standard Blu-ray), which is very simplistically attractive. Disc content is identical to the wide release UHD set. Read on for more details in the 'Special Features and Extras' section of this review.

Black Panther 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

Black Panther's 4K SteelBook, available exclusively at Best Buy, is one of the most attractive SteelBooks on the market. The matte finish resists fingerprinting. The front and back alike are made of a predominantly monochromatic silver atop of which are images of the title character. On the front, he appears in an unfinished yet still intimidating stance. With face and chest almost fully formed and arms and clawed fingers ready to strike at his side, the character takes on an aggressive posture. The legs are unfinished and paint splotches appear around him, giving the entire image something of a surreal look, as if the hero is in the process of leaping from the (silvery) shadows to strike his prey. The rear side features the character in profile, a head-and-shoulders depiction that revels the mask and telltale necklace in some detail. There's a sense of forward movement and momentum in the direction he faces with streaks of paint trailing him. The spine is very attractive. It's mostly black, broken up by a semi-irregular triangle pattern. The film's title appears center. A barely legible "Marvel Studios" logo appears at the top and a Blu-ray disc logo at the bottom (even though this release also houses a 4K UHD disc).

Inside, buyers will find the Movies Anywhere digital copy code tucked under the tabs on the right-hand side. The two discs, Blu-ray and UHD, are staggered-stacked on the right hand side. The inner print is more mass-market streamlined than the more impressively artistic front and rear exterior images. "Floating heads" featuring eight characters -- heroes and villains alike -- line the top, or the sky in this case, while below is a large-scale vista depicting Wakanda with the Black Panther standing watch atop a Black Panther rock carving on the bottom-right.

Black Panther 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

It's fitting that a great movie earns a top-of-the-line SteelBook. The exterior artwork -- front and back -- is beautiful, and the fingerprint resistant coating is a nice add. The inner artwork is a little more straightforward and borderline boring but works well enough (the "floating heads" are a bit much but the Wakandan skyline vista is a treat). The movie is of course first-rate and both the Blu-ray and UHD presentations are largely excellent, with the one caveat going to Disney's audio delivery. Very highly recommended.
