Bigfoot or Bust Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman July 21, 2022

Any film with a title like Bigfoot or Bust and a tagline on its front cover proclaiming it "the breast Bigfoot movie ever!" probably advertises what's in store as well as anything might, and so it's best to approach this property with that veritable expectations bar set to a pretty low level. On the positive side, everyone associated with this effort seems to understand how patently ridiculous it is, and so there's a decent winking quality to things that suggests the creative (?) staff is cognizant of how, well, stupid a lot of Bigfoot or Bust can be. Unfortunately, awareness can only go so far in a film that features generally incompetent "performances" and a storyline that, when it's actually comprehensible, even then doesn't make much sense.

The "plot" (and I'd jokingly say that word might be thought of as a euphemism in this particular case) involves an erstwhile talk show hostess named Dr. Dawn (Gail Thackray), whose prior broadcast evidently always focused on Bigfoot. She assembles a team of supposed "celebrities", all impossibly well endowed women, to hunt Bigfoot, who has been spotted (repeatedly) in some unnamed woods. Unfortunately for Dr. Dawn and her "team", there are two other groups out there searching for the pretty easy to find sasquatch, including a backwoods brother and sister team and some time travelling women from the future who want to collect droppings from the beast, since sasquatch poop is evidently very valuable decades from now.

It's all relentlessly energetic, if only fitfully amusing at times, and as such it's kind of ironically hilarious that writer and director Jim Wynorski mentions in the commentary included on this disc that his original intention was to make an erotic verson of the Bigfoot tale. The mind boggles at what Wynorski might have done with that formulation, especially minds (like mine) which may have recently had to review linked films like Immoral Tales and/or The Beast.

Bigfoot or Bust Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  3.5 of 5

Bigfoot or Bust is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of MVD Visual with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer mostly in 1.78:1 (as can be seen in screenshot 3, there's a weird interstitial that basically comes out of nowhere which seeks to parody The Good, the Bad and the Ugly which is in the impossibly wide aspect ratio of 3.33:1). This is an okay looking digital capture, though it does have some anomalies. For the first time in years (actually since the dawn of the Blu-ray age), I noticed repeated shimmer on aerial shots over landscapes with complex foliage (a drone operator is credited, and let's just say Wynorski evidently wanted to get his money's worth). There's also noticeable noise in some dimly lit scenes and some lack of precision during scenes featuring chaotic quick movement. Detail levels tend to be most impressive in close-ups (see screenshot 4). The palette is nicely suffused and offers good pops of color.

Bigfoot or Bust Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

Bigfoot or Bust features a reasonably immersive DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, at least given what a low budget effort this obviously was. The film is filled with a number of source cues and actual on screen music performance scenes, and those provide nice engagement of the side and rear channels, as well as some good low end energy. Ambient environmental sounds are at least occasionally placed to achieve a sense of directionality. Dialogue (such as it is) is presented cleanly and clearly throughout. Optional English subtitles are available.

Bigfoot or Bust Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

  • Animal Music Video (HD; 3:53) is actually more of a music stills, so to speak, in that the tune plays to still photographs.

  • Deleted Scene - Becky Gets Dressed (HD; 00:55)

  • Behind the Scenes (HD; 16:50)

  • Audio Commentary with Director Jim Wynorski also features Chuck Cirino, Lisa London and Becky LeBeau, and is accessible under the Setup Menu.

Bigfoot or Bust Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  1.5 of 5

It's probably actually commendable that Wynorski is willing to let women "of a certain age" still strut their stuff, and that may be enough to encourage some to check out this silly enterprise. Technical merits are passable (video) to generally excellent (audio), and the supplements are suitably goofy, for anyone who may be considering making a purchase.
