Overview

Bewitched: Seasons Three and Four (1966-1967)

The young executive of an advertisement agency, Darrin Stephens marries a beautiful woman, Samantha Stephens. On their honeymoon, Sam discloses a secret to him: she is a witch with magic powers. He makes her promise him that she will live like a mortal, without using witchcraft and spells in their lives, but sometimes she uses her magic to help Darrin and herself. Sam's mother, Endora does not accept her mortal son-in-law, hates him and can hardly say his name correctly. In the suburb of Morning Glory Circle, where they live, their curious next-door neighbor Gladys Kravitz suspect Samantha, but can never prove the weird situations she sees to her husband Abner Kravitz. Darrin works in the McMahon and Tate ad agency with Larry Tate, who is married to Louise Tate. Samantha frequently receives her witch aunts in her house, specially her sweet old Aunt Clara.

Bewitched: Seasons Three and Four Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Dr. Svet Atanasov August 20, 2025

"Bewitched: Seasons Three and Four" (1966-1967) arrive on Blu-ray courtesy of Imprint Films. The supplemental features on the release include two exclusive new audio commentaries. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for each episode. Region-Free.

Darrin's new car

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This must have been the motto guiding Sol Saks and every other writer and director who contributed to the third and fourth seasons of Bewitched. Indeed, while all material for the third and fourth seasons was shot in color, their tone and character are virtually indistinguishable from those of the previous two seasons.

But the third and fourth seasons do surprise with a couple of interesting new developments. For example, it is revealed that Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) and Darrin’s (Dick York) sweet little daughter, Tabitha (Erin Murphy), has inherited many of her mother’s special powers, and, when necessary, while simply following her instincts, is very comfortable using them. Much of the new material repeatedly features little Tabitha to create new but equally hilarious situations, and from time to time, she is treated as a legitimate star, too. Also, Aunt Clara (Marion Lorne) is frequently asked by Samantha and Darrin to assist in some way, and she inevitably mishandles her duties, creating slightly different situations, some featuring new characters as well. (Aunt Clara’s biggest fumble plunges the entire East Coast into total darkness, but reunites her with an old boyfriend who is willing to help her restore power in a most unusual way). Finally, several episodes from the third and fourth seasons frequently resurrect iconic historical figures, like Sigmund Freud, Benjamin Franklin, Queen Victoria, and Leonardo Da Vinci.

Whether needed or not, Endora (Agnes Moorehead) is always around to create hilarious chaos, too. In fact, some of her most memorable antics are in episodes from the third and fourth seasons. In one such episode, Endora creates a stunning futuristic car for Darrin, which nearly melts his mind. In another episode, Endora then punishes Darrin with a pair of ears that begin growing each time he lies.

Various episodes bring in guest stars who look very comfortable sharing the spotlight with Samantha and Darrin. For example, Angus Duncan plays Darrin’s “perfect” college buddy who has accomplished everything a man would want in his life. However, he has married Joanna Moore, who plays quite possibly the most annoying gold digger, unable to grasp that, in the grand scheme of things, even the most expensive material possessions are nothing more than disposable objects. Duncan and Moore are simply terrific together.

The quality of the direction work remains very consistent, too. Even the episodes in which little Tabitha and her brand of magic become the focus of attention retain the same energy and tempo that made all episodes from the first and second seasons very attractive. Needless to say, the third and fourth seasons are guaranteed to meet the expectations of anyone who may have spent time in Samantha and Darrin’s company and enjoyed it.

*The stylish futuristic car seen in the third season is called The Reactor. It was a real, drivable car designed by Ben Delphia and built by Gene Winfield. The Reactor made several more memorable appearances in Star Trek (episode “Jupiter 8”), Mission Impossible (episode “The Freeze”), and even Batman, where it was reintroduced as Catmobile.

Bewitched: Seasons Three and Four Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Presented in their original aspect ratio of 1.33:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted 1080p transfers, seasons three and four of Bewitched arrive on Blu-ray courtesy of Imprint Films.

This eight-disc box set presents recent restorations of all sixty-six episodes from the third and fourth seasons of Bewitched, completed by Sony Pictures.

The overall quality of the presentations ranges from very good to excellent. To be honest, the only material that exhibits a bit of softness and density fluctuations comes from the inserts, which offer a quick look at Samantha and Drrin's home, and a few transitions. Close-ups, especially with plenty of light, look fantastic. There is some outdoor footage with natural light that looks great as well. Color reproduction and balance are very convincing. While ideally the dynamic range of the visuals could and probably should be a little better, I think that all episodes have a very solid, stable, and attractive organic appearance. I did not notice any troubling anomalies to report in our review. (Note: All discs are Region-Free. Therefore, you will be able to play it on your player regardless of your geographical location).

Bewitched: Seasons Three and Four Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

There is only one standard audio track on this release: English LPCM 2.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for each episode.

The audio is predictably healthy. Obviously, a lot of material was shot in a controlled environment, so the exchanges are very clear and easy to follow. However, seasons three and four have some material with small audio effects that are pretty good. The music is unlikely to impress audiophiles because it has a very basic supporting role.

Bewitched: Seasons Three and Four Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

The third and fourth seasons of Bewitched stay in a familiar territory and delight in pretty much the same way the previous two seasons do. However, there are various new characters, plus some slightly more elaborate special effects and cool surprises, like the awesome futuristic car The Reactor, which Darren receives as a gift. Needless to say, the third and fourth seasons are guaranteed to meet the expectations of anyone who may have spent time in Samantha and Darrin's company and enjoyed it. Imprint Films' eight-disc box set is Region-Free. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
