Released alongside separate regular 4K and Blu-ray editions, Warner Bros. also offers an attractive Steelbook combo pack of Tim Burton's surprisingly solid Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Sporting stylish design elements including glow-in-the-dark outer packaging, it doubles as an easy way to get both formats in one handy package and, in my opinion, is the definitive home video edition of a 36-year sequel that, quite honestly, has no business being as good as it is.
NOTE: These screenshots are sourced from the included Blu-ray disc.
For my thoughts on video quality, please see my reviews of the separate 4K and Blu-ray editions.
Similarly, details about the Dolby Atmos audio (identical on both discs) can be found in my 4K review.
This two-disc release ships in attractive Steelbook packaging that, along with Wonka, is one of the studio's best attempts at gimmick packaging in recent years. Similar to Lionsgate's deluxe Steebooks, it's hugged by a partially transparent outer slipcase -- bearing large images of Betelgeuse and Lydia, clearly seen above -- that hide smaller images of each character set against a loopy black-and-write striped background reminiscent of the title character's suit. What's more is that all of the lighter tones on both the slipcover and Steelbook glow in the dark and the effect is striking. Inside is a playful spread of the "shrunken head" workers seen in the film, and both discs sit on overlapping hubs on the right. It's a great design overall and, of course, having both formats in one package is always nice.
The extras listed below are identical on both discs and detailed in my review of the 4K edition.
Long-delayed sequels to films rarely work out for the best, with recent successes like Top Gun: Maverick and of course Mad Max Fury Road being the most obvious exceptions. Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice doesn't quite reach those heights but comes awfully close, as its familiar elements -- creative visuals, great characters, Danny Elfman's score -- blend pretty damn well with the new material, even if perhaps one too many subplots are attempted here. There's still a lot to like and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is anything but overblown, with its surprisingly sleek running time and pinball pacing ensuring that new and old fans alike will be entertained from start to finish. Warner Bros.' 4K/Blu-ray Steelbook combo pack, like its separate standard versions linked above, offers outstanding A/V merits and very enjoyable bonus features along with stylish glow-in-the-dark packaging just for fun. Highly Recommended.
