Beetlejuice 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Second-best buy.

Reviewed by Randy Miller III August 27, 2024

Not much to see here, people. Presumably to drum up fan interest for the fast-approaching sequel, Warner Bros. has re-issued Tim Burton's 1988 classic Beetlejuice as a 4K UHD Steelbook that's obviously no longer exclusive to Best Buy. It's of course 100% identical to that earlier edition with disc contents identical to the wide release, and that includes a sorely outdated Blu-ray copy of the film. Neither are as cool as the long-OOP Amazon-exclusive Gift Set, but at least Steelbook lovers can now easily afford this collectable variant that fetched big bucks after its limited first run.

For a synopsis and appreciation of the film, head back in time to our 2008 review of Warner Bros.' 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Blu-ray; incidentally, that's the same 1080p disc included here, more than 15 years later.

For details about the 4K disc's beautiful 2160p/HDR10 transfer, please see my review of the standard 4K edition.

Likewise, details about the solid new Dolby Atmos mix can be found at the review linked above.

Beetlejuice 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.0 of 5

This two-disc set ships in Steelbook packaging identical to the long-OOP Best Buy Steelbook and features a playfully disturbing image of the title character in a surreal, hypnotic landscape below the film's logo. The back trades in green for purple with a centered golden beetle, while the inside spread features Adam, Barbara, Lydia, Minister, Delia, and Charles in a wedding scene. Both discs sit on overlapping hubs on the right side. It's a pretty neat design overall, even though I'd have loved to see at least some difference here from the earlier edition.

The disappointingly slim DVD-era bonus features can be found on the included Blu-ray and are detailed in our 2008 review of the 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (minus the bonus CD, of course).

Beetlejuice 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be in theaters next Friday, so what better way to get ready than by watching Beetlejuice? This "new" 4K Steelbook is basically just a reprint of Best Buy's Steelbook that quickly went out-of-print in 2020 and commanded high third-party prices until recently, so anyone who missed it the first time around may want to indulge. The 4K disc's A/V merits are fantastic, but the included Blu-ray is basically old enough to drive by now.
