Beetlejuice 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman September 15, 2020

Warner Brothers and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for Director Tim Burton's 1988 fan favorite 'Bettlejuice.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

The Beetlejuice UHD SteelBook certainly reflects the darkly whacky world Tim Burton created for the film. The front and rear covers are smooth and slick; the darker areas in particular will show some retained fingerprints. The front panel depicts Bettlejuice in a circus "strength game" costume with elongated arms which become blow-up hammers and a spooky merry-go-round hat on his head. He's standing in front of uneven but largely concentric circles of varying green shades. A silhouette environment lines the bottom quarter or so. The film's title appears top center in familiar purple script. The words "Michael Keaton is" appear above. A thin box wraps around much of the front, broken up by the actor's name at the top and a small image of a beetle at the bottom. That beetle appears more prominently, center in a yellow color, on the rear panel against a dark purple background which grows lighter towards the middle, also featuring those uneven concentric circles. A small billing block in lighter purple coloring appears bottom center. The spine carries over the rear's purple color. The film's title has been placed slightly above center in the same color and script as found on the front. A Warner Brothers shield has been placed at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a still depicting a number of characters from the film's wedding scene, including Adam, Barbara, Lydia, Minister, Delia, and Charles. The scene is fairly dark with reflective purples and reds the dominant hues.

Beetlejuice 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Beetlejuice has earned a playful, but still tonally dark and creepy, SteelBook, perfectly capturing the movie's essence. Warner Brothers' UHD is terrific, highlighted by its perfect video quality. Very highly recommended.
