Note: 'Battle in Outer Space' is currently available as part of a two-disc double feature with 'The H-Man.' The film is also available via Sony at a much higher price. Specifications include English and Japanese two-channel lossless language tracks, 1080p video, and an audio commentary; everything is identical to the Sony disc beyond little things like menu screen layout. Do note that the menu screen advertises Japanese and English 'Versions.' The runtimes are identical and the only differences appear to be the language tracks and the title card language.
There appears to be no meaningful difference, if any difference at all, between this release and the Sony disc. Likewise, the Japanese and English transfers appear identical beyond the title cards. For a full video review, please click here.
Both the native Japanese and English dub soundtracks are presented in the DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 lossless configuration. The tracks are not swappable in-film; one must choose which version to watch at the main menu screen. These appear to be identical to the tracks found on the Sony release; please click here for a review.
Mill Creek's Blu-ray release of Battle in Outer Space contains one extra, an audio commentary track with Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski. The pair cover the film's place along history's timeline, story structure, narrative themes, cast and crew details, production values, and much more. The pair have plenty of interesting details to share, but delivery is stale and clearly presented verbatim from prepared notes. This is the same commentary as found on the 2018 Sony release. Note that the commentary is only available with the English dub presentation of the film.
Battle in Outer Space hasn't aged particularly well next to some of the giants of its decade (War of the Worlds, The Day the Earth Stood Still) but it's a charming little venture that's straightforward, setting aside real character development in favor of building action and alien invasion danger. Miniatures, matte paintings, and manpower make the movie, and it's a welcome escape from today's big budget digital constructs. Mill Creek's Blu-ray delivers solid, though certainly imperfect, video. Audio is decent enough and a commentary track is included. Recommended.
