In an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike? The very first Elseworlds tale re-imagines the Dark Knight detective in Victorian times and puts him against the infamous murderer Jack the Ripper.

Warner Brothers and Target have collaborated on an appropriately noir-inspired SteelBook for the animated DC Universe film 'Batman: Gotham by Gaslight.' The SteelBook's contents are identical to the two-disc wide release Blu-ray. Unfortunately, this SteelBook does not contain the UHD disc, nor is there a separate SteelBook option with it included. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section below for more on the SteelBook itself.

The SteelBook's moody front cover is bathed in shades of gray and black. A caped, collared Batman stares intently forward, while a resplendently
dressed Selina Kyle gazes to the left. A sollouheted Jack the Ripper, with a knife drawn, walks into smoke and shadow at the bottom. The film's title
appears in
fairly large print, centered, but a little below the true middle spot. A DC logo appears top-left. The rear image offers more color against a similarly dark
backdrop. Batman
and Jack the Ripper fight atop a burning dirigible. The Bat signal can be seen in the skies above. The spine features the film's title in white across a
black background. A Blu-ray disc logo appears at the top while DC and WB logos appear at the bottom. Note that the SteelBook is prone to finger
printing, as evidenced in the photos.
Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand side tabs. The two discs, one Blu-ray and one DVD, are housed on the right,
staggered-stacked. The two-panel inner print spread features an eerie image of a burning city street. Fire engulfs structures on both sides while a
Ferris wheel
looms in the background, sure to be up in soaring flames in no time. A credits cluster appears unobtrusively on the bottom left hand portion.

One of the cool things about the DCU animated films is the opportunity to explore a little off the beaten path. Gotham by Gaslight is based on the graphic novel of the same name and this animation delivers a fascinating departure from the standard-fare superhero stories and settings. The SteelBook is very attractive, inside and out, appropriately moody and the artwork is gorgeous. The on-disc content is terrific, too. Highly recommended.
