Batman 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman May 15, 2021

Warner Brothers UK has released a UHD SteelBook collector's edition for the 1989 Tim Burton Superhero film 'Batman.' Both the UHD and Blu-ray discs will play on U.S. Region-A players.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the U.S. wide release. In addition to the film and SteelBook a couple of other trinkets are included. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel and the extras packed inside.

For a full film review, please see Kenneth Brown's writing by clicking here; note that the "Movie" score above reflects my own and that this link points to the 2009 Blu-ray release.

Batman 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.5 of 5

The SteelBook ships in an oversized outer shell with a large Batman logo in yellow, center, as well as a DC logo and key cast names at the top. Spine information includes the film's title, again, as well as Titans of Cult and UltraHD logos at the top and DC and Warner Brothers at the bottom. The right-hand spine simply shows the film's title. Back matter includes a color image collage, a plot summary, tech specs, a billing block, special features listings, legalese, and the like. Inside is the first of two goodies: a nifty Batarang-shaped lapel pin that is held on with two pins and feels sturdily constructed; it's not just a piece of cheap, flimsy plastic.

This Batman SteelBook is not aggressively matte but it's also not glossy. It feels great in the hand and won't show handling fingerprints even considering the rather dark color scheme. This is a nifty SteelBook that depicts essentially the same thing on the front and back: the Batmobile facing forward (front) and rearward (back), both images directly on. Above are various blueprints in metallic blue print set against a black background. The images don't completely mirror one another, though; the rear panel image has been raised a bit to accommodate a silver letter billing block that blends in nicely with the rest of the panel. The spine is a flat black with the film's one-word title in a yellow-ish color, lighter in the center, appearing center. DC and Warner Brothers logos have been placed at the bottom.

Inside, the second of two extra trinkets can be found: the playing card depicting the Joker with a bullet hole just off of center. The card's reverse side is red with the "Titans of Cult" logo and text on it. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a similar design to the front and rear, here depicting a top-down blueprint view for the Batmobile.

Batman 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  5.0 of 5

This is a winner of a SteelBook. It's uncluttered, unassuming, and unique. The movie is a classic and the UHD presentation is first-rate. This SteelBook earns my highest recommendation.
